Here's the recipe.Rip som pine 3/4 inch clear (no knots) boards to 3 and 3/4 inches wide. Make 5 strips whatever length you want the mast. Now using West system epoxy coat each board over the full length and then use wood clamps, c-clamps, etc. to hold them all together to cure. You should now have a 3 and 3/4 inch square beam. Mark a distance from one end that you want to leave square. Now take a pencil and mark one third the width of each face from every corner so each face will have two lines the full length breaking each face into thirds. Now take a block plane and plane each corner of the beam until you get to the lines. You will now have an eight sided beam. Now repeat the process and you will have a 16 sided beam. Repeat again and you will have a 32 sided beam. This will be almost round. Now take a belt from a belt sand and pretend you are shining shoes and work it along the length and it will be round. Use a little finishing sandpaper to smooth it. The planing goes quick and it turns round so fast you can't believe it.Now varnish, Cetol, etc. the whole thing and your done. You can cut a slot and install a sheave and pin to use to hoist a flag or just mount a block at the top with a halyard.Good luckDave
