Homemade jib sock?

Personally, I didn't care for the furler on our C-22, I'm a hank-on guy, but that's my opinion, and no need to go through my reasons on that again..... BUT, another solution is the Harkin high load furler, (key word "furler"). Needs a luff wire installed on the jib, but hoist it up, and when the day is done, drop it, remove it, and roll it up in a loop. No UV issues to deal with, no jib bags,(which can wear the sail from flapping in the wind). Just a thought....

Neat idea Don!

Also, I think any furling ruins the shape of the headsail due to the sail bagging in the middle. You aren't truly reefing the sail by hauling on the foot. The draft gets loose because you are furling the head and foot at the same rate as the draft along the luff. This is one reason racers prefer hanked-on sails. That and fact that they can change sails. I think you would need to furl the draft of the sail at a higher rate than the head and foot to keep a proper, tight draft. That would mean installing some wider spools at 1/3 , wider again at 1/2, and then repeat the 1/3 thickness spool at the 2/3 point on the luff. Thus, your luff would be a convex cyllinder rather than a simple cylinder.

Just an idea that I think would be fun to experiment.

Thanks,

Andrew
