To me, at least, nothing is better than dropping the anchor after a day of sailing and popping open a bottle or two of homebrewed beer or cider. I'm still a novice and have only been doing it for a couple of years, but the ease of the brewing process compared to the product still surprises me--I've never been disappointed. Does anyone else delve into the hobby of zymurgy? If not, what's your drink of choice when boating (provided you're keeping within the appropriate rules and regulations regarding boating and intoxication?) Sail safe, and cheers to all!

funny you asked this

This morning I was thinking that I need to learn how to brew my own beer because when I start to cruise, I will not be able to get my favorite, awesome, best in the world Shinerbock, brewed in Shiner Texas by German immigrant decendents. Once you've had the best, it's hard to go back to anything else. Maybe before I go I will take a job working there so I can get their receipt :) For all you who haven't had the plessure, its a mildly dark beer with a mild strong taste that goes down smooth and no after taste. Sound impoosible huh :)

Just Bottled

a batch of oatmeal stout and a winter ale (a "winter warmer", as a give-away for Christmas) about a month ago, both of which need another month of bottle conditioning for the flavors to really marry. Been brewing for about five years with a buddy. Our most consistently good style is our red ale: spicy, malty, low hops. Yeah, isn't is amazing the good results that can be obtained in your own kitchen? Mook, what was your last batch?

just completed a 2 year circum, he wrote freqeuntly about brewing his own beer and seemed to be a devoted drinker/brewer. As I recall, he really had the process down pat. Bet he has some tips or would share some via their website.

Been making my own wine for over 25 years

and make beer also. I have had the most success with the lighter Cerveso style and the wheat beers. Good summer drinking. I bottle in 500mg plastic bottles for boat use so as thereis no breakage. packs inthe fridge nice and tastes good on a hot day. Have been using British ( Mouton) kits and Aussie kits ( Cooper)

Mook,I live to brew beer during the winter months so as to have good beer during the summer. Last week I made a Dortmunder Export which is still in primary. I keg all my beers but was considering bottling some in plastic bottles with screw on tops just to bring on board during hot summer months. Beer is proof that God loves us... Ray

Good beer...

Anchor Down, do you do all grain, partial, or extract? I'm just run partial batches now, but all grain seems more economical once you get the gear. I currently have an Irish red in secondary fermentation and an IPA in primary. I did a pale ale that was great for the holidays, but the Belgian ale I was hoping to be my "winter warmer" is going to need a few more months in the bottle to be ready (still slightly flat, but drinkable.) I did a stout that is just now drinkable, and it's fantastic! I steeped it with 1/4 cup coffee before the boil and probably should have cut that back a bit, but it's tasty. Never done the wheat, but anxious to try. Shinerbock is one of my favorites, and I'll give Capt Woody a try. Brewing underway would be a challenge, but where there's a will there's a way, right?

although I haven't made a batch in a while (due to a move), I just this past Friday found a new local fixins' supplier. Looking forward to setting back a few finely brewed Brown Ales. Toast!

I love to drink home made brew while knitting & crocheting. What else is there to do when the wind is cold and the water is hard?

What makes homebrewing be any closer to

knitting and crochet than the previous 25 (at least!) discussions apiece here about how to make bread or the perfect cup of coffee???? :)

Out of 6 batches, I only liked one

of my beer brews. Hoppy and aromatic..... I liked making wine and have not done it for a year and a half. However it was just this weekend that I stayed with my daughters father-in-law (Greg) and his wife in the Elk Rapids area of just north of Traverse City in Michigan. This is prime cherry land and the fruit there is abundant. Well Greg decided to do his first batch of wine this year. He has about five 5 gallon bottles that have stopped active fermentation. He did not do specific gravity on it and added about 10# of sugar to 5 gallons on juice. He asked me to try it. After a small sip I told him that it was great but was to sweet and needed to be finished. I suggested adding about 25% water to one of his 5 gallon products and reyeasting and looking for a specific gravity of close to or just above 0. If that portion finishes better, to do it to the rest of the wine. I think that the alcohol and sugar content of the wine should hold the rest of his brew for aslong as he keps it waterlocked. What do you think? he has 25 gallons of sweet cherry wine that has double the sugar in it. I told him to tryit with aqbout 3 gallons of what he has now. He has 5 gallons of Elderberry juice and wants to start it soon. I am sending him my thoughts on where to go with it. Any Ideas out there? Wines make a nice finish to a day of sailing.(as does a good brew). r.w.landau

Bahama Brew

I was thinking of home brewing beer again when I go to the Bahamas, since the beer there is $3.00 a bottle. All I need to bring is several cans of malt, some hops and yeast. Yummmy! Cruise and Brew on! Ozana
