Watkins MKII 27 New Bern NC
Several Good Marinas to choose from

We kept our Watkins 27 at the Sheraton marina in New Bern NC for several years. The people were great and the amenities were fine. They even recently added Wireless Internet. Friday nights during the summer there is a live band on the veranda by the pool and there was always a party atmosphere. Even though it is a somewhat upscale marina (at least to us Diy boaters) We were made to feel comfortable and really enjoyed the surrounding area of historic New Bern. Unfortunately nothing lasts forever. The Marina sold to a new owner and changed the name. Then the decision was made to use the parking lot that all the Marina inhabitants parked in to build condos. Parking was moved to what we felt was an unreasonably long walk from the boat. Like others we always haul a lot of supplies and gear with us when we go to the boat, Just getting it all from the car to the boat was a struggle. Then the marina decided to start selling off the slips and all slip renters were put on a month to month basis. We no longer felt at home there as we felt like someone could buy the slip we were in at anytime and we would be forced to move or rent from the new owner. That was when we decided that a move was in order. Compromises may have to be made at our new location, ( no floating docks) but it is closer to where we like to sail and the fees are actually a little cheaper. Plus the parking is in the range we have grown accustomed to when moving gear from the car. Its the little things that matter to us especially when there are choices. We are fortunate here in NC to have several marinas to choose from and a new marina is being built as I write this.

No marina for me

I live in the small town of Slidell, about 25 miles or so east of New Orleans. The division where I live is built on a series of man made canals. So I keep the boat tied up right behind the house. About twenty steps to the boat, and about ten minutes to Lake Ponchatrain. Before I came up here, I lived aboard, in a little town in S.Texas, Port Mansfield. Slip rental was 80 bucks a month, and elect. was around ten.

mooring works for me

I,m on a mooring in raritan bay, I own the mooring tackle for a few hundred bucks and pay under a hundred/year for having it serviced & checked out the club launch provides 24/7 service during most of the season & when it's time to go sailing its hoist sails, cast off & am on my way, no channels no bridges no backing into slips and less than ¼ the cost of a marina, also no electrolisys from shore power and almost never need the engine, sail off the mooring & sail back on.

We keep our boat right here in town in the village mooring space.I like the fact that I am no more than 15 minutes from getting under way when I leave the house. I live in a small north shore LI Ny community, the fees are under 250 a year for my boat and dinghy rack,we have roughly 50/50 motor to sail ratio and a whopping total of maybe 20 boats out there. We do have the option of mooring or attepting to get a slip in the {creek} which means I would have to motor over and get the bridge opened and from what I understand it is only manned between 8 and 5 . You can make an appointment for after hours but the hassle is not worth it to me I go when I want and come back at my leasure. I keep a couple of kayaks on the racks in the creek and then if I choose to I'll just paddle to the boat and sometimes just go for a swim or sit and relax.I suppose I wil opt for a mooring as time goes on in Oyster Bay with the launch service and all but for today I like what I have.
