home made whisker poles???

I think that line controled whisker poles are great!!! BUT they are expensive. Boat hooks can be a substitute on a smaller boat. Anyone have any success with homemade poles for a larger boat 30-35' ?? I know in a perfect world I would be rich and buy a first class boat with 100% first class equipment... But with my real life situation I have limited funds available to dedicate to sailing. Sure I have $700.00 for a "cheaper" whisker pole. But the boat also needs other stuff. The money runs out long before I can buy all of the stuff the experts say I must have to sail safe. Joshua Solcum didn't mention whisker poles. But he did seem like a man who didn't want to spend a lot of money to sail. Thanks

Sure

I used a wooden pole for a while till my buddies pvc pipe broke and stuck a hole in the mainsail. I did convert an aluminim sign post with pretty good sucess, but boy it was HEAVY!

Homemade Whisker Poles

I made a whisker pole out of a telescoping automobile washing wand. It telescopes from about three feet out to seven feet. I wired and taped foresail hanks to the end of the wand. It works fine, although it isn't very pretty.

I did

I made mine from a telescoping aluminum pole used for a paint roller, it extends from about 5 to 10 feet. A few plastic plumbing parts from Home Depot and acouple of snap clips, works great

Whisker Pole Lenght

A whisker pole should be able to extend to the lenght of the foot of your largest sail. In my case that would be 13'. What could you use to make a homemade pole that long and still be adjustable and strong.

Tom, ebay has a real Forespar control line pole that should fit your boat. Currently about $150.

Great looking pole

Hi Pete; I looked at our link. 15-27' is too large for my boat a Pearson 323. I am going to think about it. Maybe cut off a few feet. Thanks

light bulb changer

hey guys, I saw a light bulb change pole at Lowes made out of fiber glass that telescope from 5' to 20' or more stonge and lite that might work???
