You can certainly use high-tech lines for lifelines—since the Spectra/Dyneema lines are stronger than the same diameter steel rope. However, most stanchions are going to chafe through them in rather quick fashion, unless the holes the lifelines pass through were fitted with tubing liners.

That could easily be done to your stanchions, where a small section of stainless steel tubing is welded into each of the holes that the lifelines passes through and the edges of the tubing flared and rounded to reduce chafe, but it would be an additional, one time expense.
I'm interested to hear why I'd not just want to use a high tech rope in place of the SS wire rope. Strength is certainly not an issue as I cant see breaking anything over 1/4 with my body that will not result in it actually being the thing that is breaking my body. Chafe is an issue but that is always with us even with the wire rope.

Your thoughts?

yo Dog, you sure are knowledgable about wire and such. Must be pretty salty. I really enjoy the comments and information given out. I suppose i will try and find the least exspensive lifeline kit's and build them myself. I will go with heavier dia say 3/16 ss wire rope. The original is 1/8 dia with plastic cover. They are certainly the original and other than cracked and yellow plastic and some superficial rust and now on the striped one full of meat hooks, they lasted along time 1975. I last checked the replies last night at around 2400 and woke up and found so many new replies this morning-don't you guys sleep? Pat

Glad to help... and no, I don't sleep very much—to the point that my wife used to refer to me as an insomniac... :D
