I've seen in the archives many articles saying that the home depot version of peel away is the same at the marine brand. talked to the company and they said that, because the marine brand covers twice the square footage, the prices are really the same. they also say the marine version goes on with a brush, whereas the home depot version uses a trowel. anyone have any input on this?

Practical Sailor did an article on paint strippers roughly 2 years ago. Their hands down favorite was the Home center version of Peel Away. They found it to be safe for fiberglass and effective through about 5 layers of paint. One trick I heard of when removing the 'peel' is to keep a wet rag handy to wipe away any remainging sludge/paint while it is still wet. This will reduce any additional sanding to very light duty work. I need to strip my keel this spring and I'm planning on using this stuff.

I talked to the Peel Away folks, too. They said that Peel Away 1 (home depot or Sherwin Williams) is the same as Marine Peel Away II. That means it will not remove your barier coat - Good for me!!

Used HD Peel Away and it worked Great
I stripped 16 years worth of hard bottom paint off the bottom of my Hunter 25.5 using the Peel Away sold at HD and was very impressed with the product. I applied it with an old paint brush then covered it with the special paper. After leaving it on for 24hours, the paint was literally dropping off the hull, and the most stubborn paint required no more than a gentle pass of a putty knife to reveal clean white gelcoat. I fololowed up with 5 coats of Interlux 2000E, 2 coats of Boat US ablative paint, and am pleased with the results after one season. No blisters or rusting keel. My neighbor in the boatyard did the same job using the Marine Peel away, the only difference in results is that I have $300 more in my wallet after the job.

thanks for the responses. i'm planning to use the home depot stuff but am trying to figure out how much to get. the marine stuff covers 50 sf, the hd stuff is 30sf. are those accurate -- if so, i'll need considerably more of the home depot stuff than i would of the marine stuff. also, is it dangerous to leave it on for longer than the recommended 36 hours?

I had a boatyard neighbor...
... who covered his hull with Peel Away and the paper cover and left it for over a week. What a disaster! It turned to concrete. Nothing would budge it. The paper was impervious. I think the yard ended up sanding it off. Moral: be careful that you get it off before it sets up. I have used Peel Away in my antique house. In the 150 years, so much paint had been applied that the detailing in the moldings was completely filled in. It was a messy job but Peel Away did a fine job of just lifting the paint right out of the grooves. Derek

I Have used it and it worked great. I followed the directions except the vinegar rinse. I also borrowed a 3,000 PSI pressure washer to remove the remenants of Peel Away and the loosened paint. I had a clean bottom to work with. I also used the barrier epoxy 2000 and CSC Micron paint. Did an outstanding job! my .02 cents worth Alan

Amount of HD Peel Away to Buy
To clean 15 years worth of paint off of my Hunter 25.5 hull, keel, and rudder, I used one of the large 5 gallon containers of HD Peel Away, and ended up having about a gallon left, which I used to clean up the dink.

The Marine product is a mixture of organic solvents, and PeelAway 1 is a mixture of basic inorganic compounds, primarily sodium and calcium hydroxides. However, PeelAway also sells Marine Safety Strip II, which is recommended for removal of the bottom paint without removing the barrier coat, and that appears to be the same formulation as PeelAway 1.

Remember that a bucket contains a gallon and a quarter (4 buckets = 5 gallons). Don't ask me why, but just keep this in mind when purchasing x amount. Just talked to another past user... He used 6 buckets for about 300 sq.ft. Seems a bit thin, but he was only taking off 2-3 coats. I have been told to be very liberal if taking of many coats. I will be removing 14 years of paint.

Topsides?
The previous owner "painted" my deck with something that almost looks like a hard tar, painted white. I'm assuming its some sort of paint. The surface looks terrible. I've no idea what the coating is, but I've decided to take it off one way or another. This peelaway sure sounds like the easy way. Are there any reasons I shouldn't try it? I just want to get down to the original surface, whatever that may look like.

I'm embarrrassed to mention how long I've been sailing and didn't know the topsides were not on the top of the boat. Now I do, so... will this stuff work on the deck? I'm not even thinking about doing the topsides.

Harry: If you have one of the older Hunters the non-skid was paintable gelcoat. When you remove the paint, you should see grayish gelcoat under the paint. I doubt that the remover is going to do much to that surface. If you want to replace the original gelcoat you can purchase this stuff. It rolls on just like paint. They sell it with a thickner and a roller. The wax can be included in the gelcoat if you want (this causes the gelcoat to setup). The other option is to use paint and non-skid particles added to the paint. Some of the non-skid paints now come with the non-skid in the can.
