They are running with
wind and waves behind them. They wouldn't want to be pushed from the stern, better to be in "front wheel drive" mode, being pulled from the front. Try pushing something from the back compared to pulling from the front...much harder and less stable.

This yacht is yawing around so much, and doesn't have sufficient drive: some more canvas up, or even just snugging that jib sheet to avoid spilling so much air, and adjusting course to keep it drawing steadily, would allow the yacht to move along faster (still slower that the following seas, so no danger of surfing/plowing) and follow a straighter course. She's wallowing through more than 90°, and bouncing around like a rubber ducky in a bathtub because she doesn't have enough way on. Big seas, little breeze calls for sail area. Being too timid means a drunken, staggering, aimless wake. Fair Winds, Jeff

Merry Christmas Jeff, how many gales have you been through skipper? This is normal, the seas blanket the wind, so you do yaw, yer right there mate. The wind is not LIGHT, look at the streakes. Too much canvas and she'll be surfing too fast and in danger of a 'pivotal broach' or a 'pitchpole' if the bow digs into the forward wave. There is no way to totally avoid that trough in a gale, the sea is ever in a single constant direction anyway. Cheers mate.

i think i would haul in the jib some and
drop a chute to stretch the boat taught to help with the pitching. or go the other way launch a spinn and surf the wave

How about
just dragin about 300' of line behind you or a bit shorter in a loupe? Dosent look like the waves are breaking that bad.

I would wake up and say" WOW, glad that
wasn't me"..... That was some serious running sea. It would be quit nasty should they chose to turn and beat into it! Running has it's bad points. The biggest is that it prolongs the weather. Any time conditions like this occur, you hope that it is of short duration and that you have plenty of sea room. With what we are seeing, those waves had to be driven for some time and from more than one direction. A sea like this would be taxing on the on board/on deck crew. This would make a good question as to set up some assumptions. Number of crew, skill of crew, how would the crew be informed as to responsibility. I would hope that this was not a three hour tour!

It looks like it's on AP to me
I've run in gales like that and THAT boat is a bit underpowered as well as not keeping the seas at 20-40 degrees on the stern IMHO. Keeping the waves on the quarter reduces the amount of wallowing. Doing this by AP sometimes looks like that as the AP is slow to adapt. When the waves hit, ya get the stern pushed first and the the bow is pulled as they roll under you. A bit of anticipation goes a long way. The AP can't anticipate, only react.

10 times And I was thinking the same thing "Auto pilot" as I cant make out anybody steering? Makes you kind of wonder who was doing the filming. Maybe the rescue boat? and now the boats abandoned? Maybe no rudder?

The above header is from the comment section, hence the spelling errors. They were in the area and were listening to communications. If ya look closely, you can see the broken port spreader on the Mizzen. The boat in question made it safely to port afterwards.
