Hole in the bilge near mast

I have a 1979 oday 30' sloop with a center board.

While looking around in the bilge. I discovered a hole just aft of the mast. It is about 4" in diameter and perfectly round. About 3" deep. It doesn't seem to go anywhere and isn't leaking. It is just there.

What is it for? Could it be for a bilge pump. There is one installed but it is more aft. This would be a deeper spot if I used it.

Any ideas?

Do you have a manual bilge pump in your cockpit? Maybe it was removed and that is where the hose from the pump was located?

A picture might help, but it sounds like it could be a sump where a hose end for a bilge pump might sit to try to get the bilge dryer than if it weren't there (as jibe suggested).

Good catch. I do have an old manuel bilge pump. That has been disconnected by the previuos owner.
