Hole in H42 Zspar mast

I have a 1997 Hunter 42. For the first time this weekend I notice a hole in the mast just above the upper spreader forward. Maybe it has always been there but I've never noticed it. The birds trying to build a nest in it is what got my attention. I might have noticed that over the last 21 years.
Anyone else have this hole. Was it plugged and the plug fell out? Has it always been there open as this the picture shows?
Any help would be appreciated.

Have it on my 1997 h40.5. My understanding is that is is a receptacle for a baby stay. If you look at the connections for the stays on the mast I think you will see a similar sized and shaped hole. I got a aluminum colored piece of metalized tape that I am going to stick on over the hole. (if I can remember to take it up with me when I go up next time). BTW, when I pulled my mast 3 years ago I found a dead bird at the bottom of the mast. I suspect it tried to build a next and could not fly up the mast to escape.

I like you Rich understood it was a stay receptacle as the mast was generic to models with or without the baby stay in the same size range.

I also have a Hunter 42, and I have an inner forestay rigged right to those holes---one for the stay and the other is for the halyard. I rigged it so long ago (about 1993) that I can't remember whether or not there was any kind of cover over the hole or not.

Paul nailed it. Ditto our boat, but no cover here either. The chase line is still there, too, if at some point I decide to install a staysail. Probably never.

I don't know that the 40.5 would support a staysail, maybe someone else can answer that for sure.

I'd love to see a picture of the rig if you have one Rick. Where does the Baby Stay attach to the foredeck.

I am in Mexico on the boat without photos. Will post when I get back.
