Does anyone know if a holding tank- the black one- ever needs replaced due to odor? Due they wear out by accumulating /retaining odor and need replaced? Our holding tank is probably 18 years old, I have odor safe (the white)hose and have replaced the other hoses and the head. I still have odor in that area. Peggy ,any thoughts? Many thanks Alan

Your tank has not permeated...

Even the cheapest thin-walled plastic tanks rarely do...and definitely not Catalina's OEM installed tanks. They're made by Ronco Plastics...the walls are 2-3x as thick as most OEM tanks. Otoh, if your tank was installed by a PO, and is metal, it's most likely leaking. Urine is so corrosive that 10 years is average lifespan of any metal tank. If it is plastic, these are the possibilities: 1. You haven't completely eliminated the odor from any spill when you replaced the hoses, 2. Your tank fittings aren't sealing completely...especially if you didn't wrap the threads with Teflon tape, 3. I have seen a couple of boats on which OdorSafe has failed..especially if bleach, any household chemical bowl cleaners, pine oil cleaners, or any other household chemical cleaning product has been used. But it's not impossible, even if they haven't. So test 'em for odor permeation...the good news is, SeaLand does warranty it for 5 years 4. The tank vent line has permeated.

is it possible that the foul odor

has permiated the upholstery and quite possibly the wood inside? Just a thought. Keep it up, Ctskip

Yes, that is possible.....but...

it's not perminate and not strong. My bulkhead was permeated, but just barely and it seems to have gone away after a couple of weeks of new hoses.

Permeating upholstery, probably not the answer.

It is generally pretty easy to find out if the head odor is in the upholstery. Basically, if you go up to the v-berth (or whereever the holding tank is), and lift up the cushions and get a gag reflex, then the problem is probably pretty localized. That is not to say that the entire boat is not permanently odorized, but, clearly if the odor is much worse near the holding tank, then fixing the obvious problem will have to improve the situation.

Alan, did Peggy say

tape the hoses or tape the fittings? I'm about to replace the hoses and reseal the fittings on mine. I will do the teflon on the threads of the fittings, and see if I like that. What should be done to the hoses? Keep it up, Ctskip

Tape

I will remove the hoses on the holding tank and put teflon tape on the threads than re-attach the hoses. I just used liquid hand soap to make the hoses slip on easier, than double clamp them. I did not put teflon tape on them first. I know that the wood or cushions are not permeated. Alan
