Holding tank vent

I replaced all of the components including the head, valves, plumbing, deck fitting, etc. in my first year of ownership, everything except the 60 litre plastic holding tank (under the V-berth) and the discharge through hull.
In my system:
- The sea water flush comes from a ¾” through hull the head pump and then through a vented loop to the head bowl.
- The head discharge Odorsafe Plus 1½” hose goes from the head pump to the holding tank directly. The holding tank has a 5/8” vent hose that goes to a fitting just under the gunnel.
- The holding tank discharge goes to a bulkhead mounted Y-valve that can be direct to the deck pump out fitting or the bulkhead mounted Whale hand pump and the 1½ through hull fitting.
- It takes 200 wet mode pumps of the head to fill the holding tank and 55 strokes of the Whale pump to empty it.
- I have never found the need to use the deck pump out. I just legally pump it empty when about half way across to The Island.

Can't say I've gone that far but for flushing out the tank, I half fill he tank with fresh water using the pump out deck fitting and then go out for some rough sailing. That (hopefully) mixes things up and then use the macerator to empty the tank.
In addition, if I leave the macerator discharge thru-hull open, the holding tank will fill again (about 1/2 hour) with sea water as there's no check valve in the pump. Slosh it around and pump out again. I do this several times each summer and "think" I'm flushing the tank.
Just to satisfy myself in the fall, I use a measured bucket to fill the tank and see if the volume is decreasing. So far so good as I'm still able to get 77 liters into it.

Lost Parent....Most likely you vent through a sanction near the head. The Catalina 30s did that.
If you want to clean out your system the very best way is to pump out, then use a hose to add fresh water into it, then pump it out, and repeat another time. This is helpful in getting out most of the stuff.
Then again, if you are doing it just because of smell, there may be other issues causing the smell. I ended up replacing my vent hose because of smell.
