Holding Tank Vent Odor

My holding is about half full and while at the
dock yesterday and when ever some one used and
pumped the head a nasty odor came out the tank vent.
What chemicals are you using and how much of it are
you using.
I think maybe I am not using the proper amount into
the tank to cause these gases to omit out the vent.
I am using CP raritan and flushing with fresh water.
What am I doing wrong.

Raritan C.P. is a bowl cleaner, not a tank product

Your tank vent prob'ly is too small/vertical/long/has bends in it or all of the above to provide enough oxygen to the tank to allow Raritan K.O. to work. However, if there's no odor till tank is about half full, Odorlos http://odorlos.com USED ACCORDING TO DIRECTIONS (which you obviously failed to read on the C.P. bottle if you're using it as a tank product) should solve your problem.

Holding Tank Vent Odors

We had a nasty odor from the holding tank vent whenever the head was used. Added an inline activated charcoal filter to the vent line and the problem went away without any chemicals. Sealand makes the one we used and it is available at most marine supply stores.

Odorlos works

We have been using it(according to directions) for 6 years and have never had an odor problem.

We have been using Odorlos for several years. It seems to do a good job. I have been purchasing in the large container and then rebagging it into small portions (1 qt zip lock bags). We use 1 scoop (Odorlos scoop) in a 25 gal. tank. If we don't pump the tank for a couple of weeks, we will just add an additional scoop in between pumpouts. We do this as a precautionary measure not because of any odor.

I use it and it works good inside of the head but again when you displace the air in the tank it is going to smell.

That's not true Joe

Air displaced by incming waste does have to get out the vent, but that air does NOT have to stink...in fact, can be completely odorless.

I suggest you check out the link below to learn how prevent holding tank odor out the tank vent...and just about every other odor on a boat.
