On June 19th I posted a question regarding odors in the head of my 1988 Catalina 30. The replies I received indicated that it might be a clogged vent hose. Upon examination I found the vent hose clear near the holding tank. So I am assuming that if a clog exists it is near the port stanchion where the vent hose terminates and the gases are supposed to vent. Does the stanchion contain some type of vent hose fixture or filter that may clog and can be replaced or must I seach for some other solution to my problem?

Jerry, I recently had a clogged holding tank vent line. On my C27, the holding tank vents to the anchor locker on deck rather than a stanchion but the vent fitting was corroded solid. I don't know if your stanchion vent has a replaceable fitting or if you need to replace the whole stanchion but I'd bet you're on the right track.

Fill your tank by pumping water from the head, and if the overflow comes out of the stantion, it's not blocked.Are you pumping out OK. I had to take the pumpout line loose at the bottom of the tank. Sanitary napkin. Made the pump shut off before the tank was empty. You can also take the vent line loose at the tank, and get a friend to blow thru it.

I have an 89 Cat 30 and I took the stanchion off last year tryng to make sure I did not have a blockage. To the best of my knowledge there are no screens or anything else inside the stanchion. It is simply a very small hole, which can easily become a home to spiders and other critters. Some reccomend spraying water through the hole at every pump-out. The problem is that the hole is so small, that you wind up getting soaked and not really sure if any water actually went into the vent. I have thought of making an adapter for the hose to make it easier to send the water through. Instead, I replaced the hose, made sure the vent was clear using water (from the bottom of the stanchion) to blow out any potential blockage. I never let the tank get more than half full before pumping out. I have also used pipe cleaners just to make sure that the vent hole remains clear.

Should be able to hear air being sucked
in at the stanchion when you pump out. On my boat vent line made a very sharp turn right after leaving tank that kinked hose causing restriction which encouraged clogging at that point.
