Here is a back-flusher I made that works well to keep the vent clean and clear clogs. It is a small sink plunger head. I opened the space between the handle and plunger to permit water flow and then used a female hose repair fitting and a hose clamp. For convenience, I added a shut-off valve. Cheap and it works. Just put it over the clamshell vent and turn it on. Rick D.

Rick, brilliant! Very similar to the one I...

made from a garden hose shower attachment. Sure does a good job keeping the tank vent line clean, eh? Terry

Rick, is this a permanent fixture?

forgive my ignorance, and, believe me...I am studying this subject very closely, as my wife has "issues" with the smell in our head (although I don't seem to notice it). I think it is the vent configuration, however I am afraid to blow air throught the vent, as I may rupture the small screen in place. The backflusher seems to me the way to go, although access to the vent may be a problem. Can you explain the mechanics behind this device?
