Its time to change out the original aluminum holding tank on my 1992, 35.5. Not becuase it leaks [it doesn't] but becuse it has a tiny 12 gallon capacity. The former owner of the boat had a 16 X 25 access door cut into the aft bulkhead which should make access somewhat easy. Here are my questions : has anyone with the same model and year Hunter had a tank fabricated or otherwise supplied that a] has a larger gallonage capacity yet fits in the same space as the original without having to relocate plumbing fittings etc. b] has supplied the specs to the tank fabricator so I can call them and they will know the 35.5 application from their records? Can anyone supply me with the name of the fabricator or supplier and cost? I would consider either a molded plastic or stainless steel tank Thx Fred Miller M-Squared

Consider treatment instead

The first is what you're thinking--a larger holding tank. However, an even better solution would be a Lectra/San--CG certified Type I MSD that treats waste and discharges it overboard...legal in almost all coastal waters south of RI, and a FAR better solution to onboard waste ecologically than a holding tank. Others here have installed a Lectra/San and love it. Check it out on the Raritan website at http://www.raritaneng.com It will make a 12 gallon tank adequate, because you'd rarely use the tank...only if/when you should visit a "no discharge" harbor. As far as a replacement tank of any size is concerned, stainless is no better choice than aluminum. Plastic is the ONLY material that should be used for waste holding. The best place to start looking is Ronco Plastics...they make TOP quality tanks for a very reasonable price...have more than 400 shapes and sizes--over 100 of which are non-rectangular--and install fittings in the sizes/locations specificied by the customer when they make the tank. Their website is at http://www.ronco-plastics.com One of comments led me to believe that you want to replace the tank without also replacing the hoses. Replacing the tank without replacing hoses at the same time is a mistake you'll live to regret when you have to do it anyway in another year or so

Peggy, Right On!

Peggy; I would'nt think anyone would be as pound foolish as not to replace the hoses. The elecra san option sounds good except . . .my marina in NJ is very strict on sanitation discharge, even treated waste. In fact they check what owners use to wash their boats too . .and they're right for doing so, of course. So a bigger tank is what I need for those weekends with my extended family aboard. Out at sea I can mascerate if I had too. Do you think RONCO has built any replacement tanks for my model H 35.5. I'm curious to see what sizes other 35.5 owners moved up to. Thanks Fred Miller

I would double check whether treatment

is allowed in your marina...and especially the harbor it's in. Even if only the marina is "no disharge" (which is stupid because treated discharge is cleaner than runoff from the shore and bilge water allows the water in any marina to be), that doesn't mean the waters outside the marina's boundaries are...check it against the EPA state by state list of "no discharge" waters at http://www.epa.gov/owow/oceans/regulatory/vessel_sewage/vsdnozone.html If it's not on that list, the small tank size would be an issue only if you stay in the slip instead of going sailing. There's only one way to find a tank that will fit: check the drawings in the catalog against the available space. Keep in mind that you can orient them any direction.

Fred

go to the archives for H35.5's. I have a procedure for replacing the holding tank on a 35.5 with pictures. I replaced with a Ronco tank that hold 25 gallons. Life is good again. Jim Rushing

Archive Problem

Fred, you will have problems if you try to go straight to the archives and then to the 35.5 holding tanks. I have notified Phil of the problem. If you go to the 35.5 portion first and then go to pictures, I think that you might make it. If not, then wait for Phil Herring to fix it. Jim
