Holding tank on Hunter26

I want to install a Jabsco manual Marine Head on my 1995 Hunter26. Has anyone ever did it? Where is the best place to install the holding tank? I will have the deck pump out fitting and the seacock proffessonnaly installed. I just don`t know where to place the holding tank. How far from the head can it be positioned, must the connecting hose be at an angle towards the tank because this could be a problem on a water ballast boat. there is no place on the boat where the holding tank can be position lower than the head. can anyone help me.

On your boat, there are two opening doors in the rear berth. The one on the port side will reveal an area with no platform. That is where you should build a platform for the holding tank. You will need to remove the back panel and remove it out. Lines are led aft on the port side from the head. If you trailer alot, I would not recommend a head but rather a porta poti. The porta poti also has a unit designed for pump out as well which you might want to llook at.

In additon, after each time the head is pumped out, treat it. In addition should you go for a traditional head, the stink usuall comes from the line from the head to the holding tank. Use white vinegar religously to defunk that smell.

I would prefer to keep the porta poti and I already have one, but regulations in Canada now requires a permanent toilet installation ( one that can not be remove ) while I occasionally trailer the boat to different places, she spends must of the summer at our dock on lake St-francis which is part of the st-Lawrence sea way and our region is under tight surveillance.

What exactly to you mean by treat the head? Other than normal cleaning.

Also, the line / pipe to the tank have to climb up to the connector on the top of the tank, I imagine it will take a lot of manual pumping at the head to clear the line. So I assume the line will always have stuff in it, right? is that a problem? when the boat is heeling is there a risk that the tank empties itself?

For your use you could use a msd portapotty rather than a head/tank combination. The thetford and sealand portapotties both come with a pump out msd which is legal up here. - we put one in to be legal in ontario. A search of the archives will give you the comparisons between a 5gal portapotty and an equivalent tank. - if I recall correctly it is in the area of 13gal. Only go head/tank if you are going larger than this.

We use a 5gal sealand msd on our 260 and it lasts 2 adults and 2 kids 2-3 days between pump outs while aboard.

In Canadian waters, they requrie a pump out type head. The Port Poti also has one that you can install easily with a pump out for deck mount and that should suffice. If going that route, always put deorderant in after each pump out. Sometimes I would also use white vinegar down the spout which helps tremendously and is also great for treating the line between the fixed head to a holding tank usually in the back of the boat.
