Hi,
Does anyone know the capacity of the holding tank on a 82 Hunter 30?
I am trying to decide whether to repair/replace the non-working head, or just use 5.5 gallon porta potti for weekend to four day cruises for my wife and me. I expect that by day three, we will need to stop and empty the porta potty. How many flushes can one expect with the existing holding tank and a Wilcox Crittenton Head Mate?
Thanks for any input.

If you get the measurements of your existing tank H (height) x L (length) X W (width)/231 = Gal. (ie: 12" x 12" x 12" = 1728/231 = 7.48 gal.

The tanks are not that expensive, I suggest that you replace it and get a decent toilet.

Consider replacing everything with an "MSD" portapotty

The MSD designation means it's designed to be permanently installed and fitted for pumpout. A 5-6 gallon model holds 50-60 flushes...you'd need at least a 30 gallon holding tank to hold that many flushes from a manual toilet.

How many days is that for two people? Well... the average adult uses the toilet 5x in 24 hours. A manual toilet flush averages about .6 gallons...so that's 3 gal/day/person. You'll need to know the capacity of your existing tank to know how many days that'll last two people.

But because portapotties use so little water, they hold a lot more flushes...a 5-6 gallon model should last two of you 5 days.

Thetford offers a retrofit kit to turn a portable tank into an MSD version.

This doesn't have to be a permanent decision...any "new old boat" is gonna have a lot ways to spend money...and this is an inexpensive way to give you a complete sanitation system that's adequate for your needs for at least this season. If you decide you want something a bit more sophisticated next year or the year after, we can discuss the best solution for your needs then.

Meanwhile, you might want sped some time reading the discussions in the Head Mistress forum...lotta good info there.

I believe your original holding tank was a bladder in the v-berth locker. Those have at least a fifteen gal. capacity. I had one and replaced it with a Ronco in the same area. It can be seen in the H37C "Hunter Owner Mod". But the tank was OK, just some odor from the hoses. There are some old threads found in "Search" about your boat. Here is one:

My 82 H30 has a molded in fiberglass tank in the V berth. The next time at the boat, I will try to estimate the capacity. It does not seem to be very big.

I have the same fiberglass holding tank in the v-berth, tabbed to the hull on the port side. Can't get to the boat this week, but I would guess roughly a five gallon capacity. 231 cubic inches = 1 gallon.
