Are there any remedies for cleaning the inside of the holding tank and tubing? I use the standard chemicals in the head, but the odor is in the seating compartments and storage areas surrounding the holding tank. Has anyone used laundry detergent in the holding tank? It is a C34 1990. Help I cant' take it. We only put liquid waste in tank, but the previous owners may not have.

Boat Odors

I believe your Catalina has a plastic holding tank. Unless there is a leak at a seam the smell is not from the tank. You hose/s may be the problem. Wrap a warm damp towel or rag around the hose for a couple of minutes. When removed if it smells then your hose is bad and need to be replaced. Bilge odors can be as bad if not worse then head odors, investigate all possibilities. The best tank, head and bilge treatment products are from Raritaneng.com, try their KO and CP products. Search the archives on this site. Peggy Hall (Head Mistress) is the expert and her book is available from this site, there are volumes and volumes of information available. I have a 1988 Catalina 34, with her book and following her advice I have no (Zero) head or other smells on my boat.

Steve is right on. I replaced a PO's head to tank hose using a special rated sanitary hose from defender marne supply. It was a hard job cause the hose is very rigid. BUT..it was totally worth it! Now I have zero odor and the Admiral was impressed and happy. (a first) Most likely suspect is that darned hose. Good luck. John

Thanks a ton. I am going to my boat today and will first try the damp rag idea. I am also going to order the book from Peggy. I will let you know how things go.
