I am the new owner of a 1978 Catalina 27. What is the best way to eliminate holding tank odor?

If they are as old and bad as the ones that were in our Endeavour, you might just want to remove the lines and possibly the tank and replace with new ones. There was no hope for ours.

Our lines and tank are out and a new larger tank in but not the new lines yet. I'm going to use PVC as much as is possible with good flexible sanitation lines on the ends.

I'm surprised people try and sell a boat that has that odor, but I guess Ruth and I are good examples that you can do it ,

P.S. If you do pull the old lines have a plan, because what might be in them can create a situation that you don't want to find yourself in. I had someone else pull some of ours and Ruth and I pulled the rest and it wasn't a job I'd like to repeat .

Ditto on the plan to pull the lines. The hoses have spring in them - 'nough said. I also agree that if you really want to eliminate odors start with a new system. Then all the maintenane tips found here will keep it fresh; but if it stinks it's going to stink!
