IT'S TIME TO CHANGE HOSE CLAMPS AND POSSIBLEY HOSES TO MY WASTE HOLDING TANK IN MY 1995 HUNTER 35.5. MY QUESTION IS -----HOW DO I GET TO THE HOSE CONNECTIONS ON THE HOLDING TANK? AS I LOOK AT THE TANKS FROM THE REAR LAZARETTES, I SEE NO WAY TO GET DOWN THE SMALL OPENING (IN THE FLOOR OF THE LAZARETTE) TO WORK ON THE HOSES/CLAMPS. ANY IDEAS?

Time for the Opening

Sooner or later you will have to cut the opening in your back bulkhead. Check the archieves for the instructions on how to do it. Once you have the opening, then you can do your maintenance and be ready for the next step. That is replacing the tank when it starts to leak.

Tank Changeout?

If you have the original aluminum holding tank, you should consider changing the tank as well as the hoses/clamps. The aluminum tank will fail (probably at the welds), it is only a matter of time. There is plenty of documentation on this site that attests to that fact. Many owners who have changed the tank say the difficult part of the job is the hoses. As long as you are doing the hoses, change the tank as well when you can do the work at your leisure.

Jim Is The Man With The Plan

I followed Jim's great instructions. . .and I mean GREAT! I'm ready to go with a tank change out on my '92, 35.5 as soon as I see [or smell]a leak. My tank was previously removed by the former owner who had all the seams rewelded. I personally would have swapped it out for a RONCO molded tank . .but hey, I didn't own the boat back then. I'm not changing this tank out though until I see a problem . .I think that was Peggy's advice too, and my advice to you. Fred Miller M Squared

And Jim, that will give you time to follow another

of Peggies suggestions. Install a LectraSan. I did and love it. All those rotten holding tank problems are GONE.

Fred F.....where'd u put it?

the lectra-san unit that is, and what boat do you have? I can't figure out where to put the unit on my 37.5.

Don, I just have a 'lil ol' H34 but I gained a lot

of room because the LectraSan is so much smaller than any holding tank. Remember, you won't have both. I put mine in the old holding tank locker under the forward dinette settee that now has room for the 6 gallon water heater and the DVD subwoofer, plus through hulls and anchor wash pumps. But a problem exists. Four of the SIX holes needed for my old holding tank setup in the beam of the head floor, are empty. Can't think of a thing to use them for. Oh well, more 'Starboard' I guess. :)

My two cents

I was having all sorts of problems, i.e., bad odors, on my 1991 35.5H. I did the cloth test on the hoses--they did not seem to be in that bad of a shape--and nothing would seem to indicate that the tank is leaking. Granted, it is possible the hoses had something to do with the problems. However, following Peggy's advice and ideas from others, this is what I did: 1) I no longer use river or bay water to flush down waste. Instead, I keep a plastic cup in the head and fill it with fresh water from my tank to flush down waste. 2) At the end of the day, or at least two to three times a day if many are on board, I pour down a bit of CP (West Marine)to deodorize. 3) I religiously empty the holding tank every week and flush it with fresh water. 4) I use any of the two live bacteria ingredients to kill the bad odors. You will not believe the difference! I was already entertaining the idea of replacing the tank and hoses, but forget it. This year, it was as if I had placed a new tank; no odor whatsoever.

Sorry for the delay

Get a clean piece of cotton and rub it against each hose. If you smell you know what on the cloth, it means that odor, thus a bit of you know what is seeping through. It is time to change the hoses. However, I would try my recommendation first.
