Holding Tank Capacity

Hi,

I know some of you have installed holding tanks (Walt/Judy) for you head in your Vegas. I've been considering getting rid of the porta-potti on my Vega, and re-installing a marine toilet with a holding tank. What capacity holding tank do you guys recommend for the job? And how do you get it behind the vanity in the head closet?

Thanks,
Steve DeMont

Hi Steve. We built a holding tank for Lyric out of fibreglass to fit behind
the head on Lyric. We used luan plywood (door skin) cut to the shape of the
bulkeads in the head compartment. put a layer of glass on them and then
waxed the inside of the hull between them. We then put glass over the the
hull and overlapped the glass onto the side pieces. We then removed it and
added a front and top. We installed a clean out on the top and plumbed it to
pump overboard from a small Whale pump or to a deck pumpout. Capacity is
estimated at around 6 gallons. We could have made it a bit bigger by
removing the sliding sink and going higher but we'd already replaced the
sink with a sliding drawer. The head was removed and replace after the tank
was back in. Lyric had a flexible tank foward of the V berth cut out when I
got her but it smelled. Good luck and put multiple layers of glass down
after you get it to shape.

Steve: Mine's about 8 gallons installed under the v-berths aft of the water
tank. It's a rectangular Wilcox-Crittenden installed by the first owner. It
used to smell, but I replaced all the hoses with hard pipe (abs) where
possible and top quality no-odor hose where not, and it doesn't smell at all
now. The location works well for me, and keeps the weight low in the hull.
