Holding Tank Bladder?

Hi,

I have been looking at used Hunter 27s and realize that most of them have a waste holding tank...usually under the v-berth. My question is, do this tanks usually contain a bladder or is the tank simply part of the boat made out of fiberglass?

I am concerned about the 'old boat smell' I find in most boats as a consequence of a leaking holding tank or a tank with no bladder.

Thanks,

Steve

None of the above

Although some older boats do have integral fiberglass holding tanks, and occasionally you'll find a bladder in one of those, but it's only because the bladder was the least expensive solution to a problem with the tank. 90% of waste tanks are rotomolded polyethylene tanks installed in the boat...about 10% are aluminum or stainless or a bladder, none of which are good choices for waste holiding.

You'll find a lot of good information about waste tanks in the discussions in the Headmistress forum.

Thanks Peggie. It is good to know most boats have a plastic tank...which hopefully can be replaced if cleaning does not remove the smell. Through reading up on cleaning methods (on this forum), it looks like there are many tricks to maintaining offactory harmony.
