Thanks rick it will be great to meet you in Feb. :)

I liked catalina 42s, but Nikki liked the 40.5. Pretty much every C42 smelled like SH!T and no 40.5 we boarded did. I just hope ours will be OK. The previous owner (one owner boat) almost never used the on board toilet and when he did he used only fresh water to flush. So with any luck it will be good.

I'm about to join this club by the looks of things

I sent down someone to take a look for me today as I'm sat in Iraq and his words were

'Good God' when he stepped aboard

:( nothing but issues again I guess when I get back

Vent line

Thanks Rick!
It feels/smells great to be in the club... of which you are commodore!
On my 40.5 I moved the vent up to the bow with larger Jose
It tends to vent the tank better facing into the wind
As well, you don't have the sloshing around smell so much as you heel.
The original vent location on stbd side tended to outagas as the boat heeled
The original aluminum tank was a problem from day one. Small hairline weld cracks were very common

Alas I too am about to join the club-just as a preventative measure. Did anyone ask triple M for anything special-they sent me a diagram and it looked good to me..

Yup, like Rick D. sez, replacing the vent line is a PITA.

However, I did replace mine and I went up to a 1" line when I installed my new tank from Triple M. I had them provide a 1" threaded hole for the vent in the tank instead of the original smaller size.

You have to work the replacement through the electrical panel and you need a hose barb to threaded thru-hull where the fitting is a molded right angle. Clearance in this area is very small.

The picture below shows the new 1" vent in the original spot next to the aft shower sump outlet. Also shown is the right angle fitting that you need. Idealy you want a nps (straight) thread rather than a npt (tapered) thread. I don't remember if I was able to get the nps or if I just used a npt with lots of sealer.

This might be a daft question so please bare with me

With the vent not having the protected scoop on it like the original not mean you will get water intake when heeled over?

Kind Regards

Guy

Hello everyone,

went to this 2 years ago and I followed all good advices that were here, except for one thing. I changed every hoses because of bad odors but I didn't change the tank. I rather tested it with a radiator pressure tester after I changed my gauge sensor and was pleased with the result. Well, the gauge is stucked again (WEMA) and odors are back (no link between the 2, I know). I personnaly believe the gauge hardware and seal is the problem for my tank (I think it's original, don't know). Although I have modified it for a better seal, the aluminium sheets are just bending too much and I think it doesnt seal perfectly when it gets full. I might be wong. But you can sure add another one on the list for a new tank. Also, that SCAD tank external sensor is WOW!

Thanks everyone for your advices.

I see outlets for two heads and one pumpout either macerator or deck . Are they joined somehow? shouldn't ther be 4 outlets?

I've been away from this thread for a while. I asked Triple M to increase the vent hole size to a 1" threaded hole and also to change the original 2" plain hole for the WEMA sensor to a 1" threaded hole. I had an existing threaded PVC non-moving sensor that would thread into this hole. I think the external foil sensors would be better (no hole) but I already had the threaded PVC rod sensor.

I don't think it is an issue- at least not for me. I don't that I usually heel enough to put the vent under water, and even if it did, unless there is another way to displace air from the tank, water should not enter the vent. Bottom line- I've never noticed any problem.

The tank has one outlet. This outlet has an internal tube that goes to the bottom of the tank. The outlet has a tee where one side goes to the deck pump-out connection and the other goes to the maserator and then to the overboard seacock.

thank you so much..i ordered the tank to be delivered for my arrival in fla after Christmas and want the process to be as painless(ha ha) as possible
wondered about the missing "line". My tank isn't leaking but the macerator pumps air. might as well bite the bullet now and get it over with instead of at Staniel Cay.

If anyone is looking to replace their tank with one from Triple M in the spring be sure to order it now. Last I spoke to them they were super busy with a lot of orders dealing with commercial accounts, they appreciated me giving them until April for the tank.

I can't wait to have guests aboard and not be embarresed by the odor!!!!!!!! The price went up to I think almost $600.00, expensive but priceless!!!

It isn't a problem. You need two people, not because of the weight, but because it's awkward. It fits easily through the companionway if you turn it sideways.

Edit: actually, one person can do it, but you'll feel better having two.

Well, you could always show your wife this photo, but at your own risk!
