Packing Gland-Locknut Anyone?
I haven't really gotten over losing my rudder (Hunter 33, 1980) because Warner Bros didn't clean up Pt. San Pablo Bay when they finished filming "Blood Alley" in 1950 with John Wayne/Lauren Bacall. And it took me an awful lot of searching to find a replacement rudder. Finally got one through "SailboatOwners.com", a Foss. But now when my marine service center went to install it, they found two parts so electrolyzed -Packing gland and locknut--that they couldn't use them. O.K. go get new ones? Not on your life. They don't have any such stock and haven't a clue where to find them. "SailboatOwners.com" wasn't helpful and found that Hunter was closed all this week. I called around to different shops. No luck. Now I'm being told I have to get them custom made at a machine shop and it may end up costing $1000+. The Foss only cost $1645! Help! Isn't there someone who keeps making these? I have a rudder problem you all might help me with. I hope. The rudder on my hunter 28.5 sticks and or jams quit a lot. It can be worse with the screw turning but it still jams under sail. And will sometimes stick when turning the wheel at dock. I have been underwater and can't see a reason. And can't see where it might be jamming in the on board mechanism. Certainly engine torch makes it worse but it is not consistent. Any ideas before I just haul it and have a hard look?
Thanks

If possible I would bring the parts to local machine shop (check on line craigslist) and simply have them make it. Spent my youth machining on the SF waterfront and fabricated/modified fittings on a regular bases (DC was testing America cup boats and he kept us busy..his crew couldn't keep a boat in one piece). Looks like a few hrs. work tops. Could be made from stainless tubing and doesn't have to look exactly like that. Instead of "hex nut" a few holes around circumference would work just as well to tighten.

Check to see if the bearing is sheared off just redid mine this year the upper bearing shears the screws off and the whole assembly turns and could bind
