Packing Gland-Locknut Anyone?
I haven't really gotten over losing my rudder (Hunter 33, 1980) because Warner Bros didn't clean up Pt. San Pablo Bay when they finished filming "Blood Alley" in 1950 with John Wayne/Lauren Bacall. And it took me an awful lot of searching to find a replacement rudder. Finally got one through "SailboatOwners.com", a Foss. But now when my marine service center went to install it, they found two parts so electrolyzed -Packing gland and locknut--that they couldn't use them. O.K. go get new ones? Not on your life. They don't have any such stock and haven't a clue where to find them. "SailboatOwners.com" wasn't helpful and found that Hunter was closed all this week. I called around to different shops. No luck. Now I'm being told I have to get them custom made at a machine shop and it may end up costing $1000+. The Foss only cost $1645! Help! Isn't there someone who keeps making these? Tom Luce 510-684-6163
