I recently purchased an O'day 23 in rough shape, I have been working on it trying to get it in the water before the end of the season. I have figured out most of the rigging, but I am stumped at how to secure the foot of the sail to the boom. There is a line with a small block attached at the aft end of the boom and one block 1/4 of the way back up the boom towards the mast with a cleat in front of it....Am I missing some parts here? My previous boat was a Santana 20 that had a small internal halyard for the foot of the sail....If you have pictures that would help!!!

If you go to the Boat Info tab on this page then to photos and specs then choose the 23 you'll see various photos. Looks to me lke it is similar to the set up on my 25. There is a bolt rope sewn into the foot which you would start from the aft end and work forward into the slot along the top of the boom. There should be a line off the aft end. It comes straight back through the block then take it back towards the mast to the cleat you mentioned and cleat it off. Then go sailing!Good luck,Mike

The block built into the starboard side of the boom is for reefing. The reefing line starts on the port side, up through the sail, and down through the built-in block on the starboard side, and then to the cleat. With a little more work, you can continue the line forward to the mast, run it through new blocks, through the sail and back to the cockpit. I am still working on refurbrishing my 23'. This is your Outhaul

The Reinforced pad where the main sail foot meets the leech is called the clew. The eye grommet in the clew that you refer to is made to have the Outhaul line that we are talking about tied to it. You don't need a block at the clew; just use a small bowline to tie your Outhaul (1/4" double braid) to it. The line will then pass through the small outhaul block on the top tab at the aft end of the boom. After you have pulled the foot of the sail into the boom track and secured the tack (where the sail foot meets the luff) at the mast end of the boom with the pin through the reinforced eye grommet there, then reeve the Outhaul line through the outhaul block and take up all slack in the foot. Secure the Outhaul to the cleat on the starboard side of the boom. Happy sailing.
