wish to lift 1973 Catalina from trailer to work on underside.Have hoist and slings available.do not have lifting beam to spread slings . Intend to use notched 4x4s at deck level between slings,to keep them clear of ends of keel. Bought boat late summer 06,new to sailing, any advice on this project. Thanks.

Lift points on C22

When I lifted my 1980 C22 last summer for bottom paint I positioned the rear sling 4 to 6 inches aft of the swing keel. The front sling was about 4 inches forward of the mast. There was very, very little hull distortion with these points. I don't quite understand the placement of your 4x4's. Our sling strap mounts were wider than the boat by about 1 foot and we padded the straps where they contacted the sides of the boat with soft rags to prevent scratching of the hull paint. Since the lifting slings were mounted seperatly and directly over their respective hull points there was no worry about them closing together fore and aft. If your sling seperating 4x4's must control beam width and fore and aft spacing both, then I would have concerns that the fore and aft portion of their job would fail. The lifting points must be directly over their strap placement to safely work. I might have mis-understood your 4x4 use so please disregard the last paragraph if I did. Good luck, Ray

lifting 22

Thanks for your reply, I have two 16ft nylon slings plus four 4ft steel slings.I intend to basket the boat with a four point lift,in the area you recommend.I will now have two 24ft slings,"nylon plus steel"going to the hoist hook, which will be center over the boat. This changes the direction of lift force from vertical to approx 60 deg, My concern is that the slings will slide along bottom of hull and jamb against keel. The idea of the 4x4s at deck level is to prevent this. Again thanks for your input. Wanderer.
