That is mean John.

What am I doing at work? Looking out at the snow and reading your mean and nasty post. Maybe you'll get caught in a Nor'easter today and, hopefully, will get back to write about it here on HOW. :) Jealous? No way . . . .

John

You lucky dog.

Well I have to admit that I am just a little jealous, you're not only sailing, but you're visiting my favorite place in the world. I still regret not taking that job up there 10 years ago. My trip will be a little longer, but I plan to cruise to the Vineyard next summer in my new H 33. See you there. Good luck and great sailing. John M.

Winter in N. Texas

Yesterday it was 70 degrees and the wind was blowing 30 mph out of the south. Today it is 40 degrees and the wind is blowing 30 mph out of the north. Winter will be over in about two more months and then the spring rains start.

HO< HO <HO TO YOU

Hey Captain John, You will get yours. At some point this winter you will be digging out, probably more than once. Down here in SE Florida, we never have that problem. Average winter temps 75 degrees and 10-15 knot winds. You enjoy yourself today and keep your fingers crossed that you will be able to do it again before April, while we will be out sailing every day from now until-------oh, it never stops, endless summer. Regards, Darrel

everything is relative

Funny how you consider temps in the 30's to be mild.......also, if your gonna have chowda, ya gotta get cakes

New Orleans winter...

HO Ho Ho woooo Coooold

Awesome and wonderful it was. I had the turf firplace chugging. The wind was nice with a wee bite to it. I'm chilled to the bone but the chowdah was awesome and the coffee ended up to be an irish coffee. Boat is safe at the dock and I'm safe and warm at home. Will let everyone know when i go out again so you can perform well at work lol:). Thanks for all the replies and threats. But you warm weather sailors don't share the same blood as us northeast sailors. We're more rugged.......lol

Jealous....

John... I'm soooo jealous. I want to be a tough yankee like you so I'm gonna spend the night in my refrigerator. If you guys are so tough why do you go home and turn the heat on? I was born in Connecticut and lived there until I was 24 years old. That's when the light came on and I got the the Hell out. Now I have to put up with these warm Texas winters...poor me! I used to fly a Luscombe 8A out to Martha's Vineyard.. Is it still as beautiful as it used to be??? Ron

What kind of fireplace is that?

It looks both neat and warm. Where did you mount it? Gary Wyngarden S/V Shibumi H335 PS We'll be out on the water over New Year's at 49 degrees North--that's latitude not temperature. Your fireplace might come in handy.

The firepalce is a Newport Solid fuel heater

Thanks for the fridge comment ron! The heater is a newport solid fuel heater. I burn authentic irish turf. It is imported from Ireland from a friend of mine. The unit is mounted on the port v berth bulkhead. I removed the vent on the port side cabin top to put in the deck iron. The unit is great. you can burn wood, coal, turf, or pelletts. The turf makes the irish coffees that much better. check out my website photos to see it on the bulkhead. www.selkiecharters.com.

Newport Solid Fuel Heater

John, Your heater seems to have a see-through door. The current models seem to have a solid door. How old is yours? Do you know if they changed the design? Thanks. Gary Wyngarden S/V Shibumi H335

Not jealous, just curious....

how are you emailing and posting responses if you are sailing around in the sound, John? oops, I mean Capt. John... :) Hope you are going to tell me you have that worked out so you can email away from the shore, now that's something I would be jealous of for sure. We get to sail year round here in Georgia, just enough winter to remind us it is winter, but as they say in Georgia, if you don't like the weather, wait 3 days, it will be completely different. By the way, I really like your website and your boat looks very nice. Mine is a 1982 Hunter 33, looks simular but different with the ports that all open. Happy holidays! Sincerely, David.. oops, I mean Capt. Dave (as my friends call me, not official)

Well Ho Ho bloody Ho Ho

Down here? Well its about 25c. Bit of wind blowing. Long term forecast for the 25th. Oh about 30 or so with 10-15 knots. Yawn Yawn. Like this for another 5 months.

Response to Gary

The fireplace/solid fuel heater i purchased in Newport Rhode Island. It came off an old barque. They were installing a new propane heater/fireplace. If you look again at my photo you will see a ceremic tile with a boat on it. That door slides up and down for the viewing pleasure.

Repsonse to Dave....

Captain Dave from Captain John:) Thanks for the compliments on the website. I have been looking for a way to email from the boat but its not in the budget yet. Not willing to give up the irish coffees budget:) Plus if I had email on the boat I would be reachable for the wife and clients and everyone else. At least I can still say the cell phone was out of range. Now seriously, I went out for several hours sailing the sound. It only takes me 45 minutes to sail to the Vineyard from Falmouth harbor. I sailed around 6 hours yesterday. Then came home to warm up and see how many sailors I got to at work. If you send some georgia winter up here I'll send some Cape Cod down there. thanks John oooppps CAPTAIN JOHN

Repsonse to Mark......

You tricked me! I read the email this morning and I read by the 25c so fast I thought it was 25f. SO for a few moments you had my admiration. 25c to 30c for the next few months your poor thing. I had to go to my conversion scale to see what the f conversion was. 77-85f degrees. Just give me the pleasure you were at work while i was sailing. but wait there' that time factor. I was sailing by 10am then that would mean it was midnite in australia. I returned to the dock by 4pm which would be 6am Australia. Mark the facts are in....You Slept while I sailed..ZZZZZZzzzz. You'll never crew on my boat:)

What I do in the winter

Hey you guys in the warm south I have just as much fun in the winter in Maine. I’ve found if you put some long johns on get some nylon shell pants and etc. winter feels like summer. With the new snowshoes available now from MSR and other makers that have cleats, and traction bars hiking mountain in the winter is great. Some of the prettiest times to climb mountains is in the winter, sunsets you wouldn’t believe. Dressed right with breathable windproof shells and its just like any other time of year. There are a lot of people doing this now and most of the trails on the mountains are used broke out all winter now. I find most people dress too warm in the winter for hiking and don’t wear the right cloths. They sweat too much and get cold. Its important to take a pack to stow your extra cloths when you get too warm. There are tons of touring centers for cross country skiing I never run out of new places to go. Too out of shape to go cross country skiing and hiking? Then try down hill or snow mobiling, its a little more expensive but easy to do and a whole bunch of fun. I own about 85 acres and winter is also the time I work in my woods, nothing big just pruning pine thinning stands so the trees grow faster. I use my farm tractor its fun and its like putting money in the bank. Sure I love sailing but life is about living. The sights I see like sunsets from a mountain top or snow swirling around a summit. 40 mile winds buffeting you on top of a peak. Coming in to a warm kitchen with the smell of fresh baked roles and soup after being out in the woodlot all day. I wouldn’t give any of this up either. So I want to say life couldn’t be better in the great white north in the winter or the summer.

I'm with Richard.

"You grow where you are planted" or some such thing. I'll test the salt waters, maybe sooner than later. But I will come home to the Great Lakes. It's snowing now, very pretty out of my office window. Tonight a fire and a good book. This weekend I will check on Ladylove and do some skiing. March will be here before we know it. Don't feel too sorry for us. :)

Re. e-mail Dave.

If you can reach a Verizon tower it is very affordable to do e-mail from the boat. My laptop and Verizon phone do it slowly(19KB) but efficiently. I have unlimited nights and weekends and 1000 minutes per month. The only additional cost is the $10./month for Juno. Now how do I attach that phone to the VHF antenna?
