How boring this has all become! And for one who has been here for a couple of years, how dreadfully repetitive! (I admit it has been a great source of info and commeraderie for me). But still, is anyone doing anything CRAZY? How about Jose sailing to Bermuda! First time? What did you do to the boat to get ready? Yourself? Crew? Navigation? How much water will you carry? Anyone do any major mods to their boats? I mean, like real BASHING! Any conversions of Catalina 30's or 36's to pilot house or center cockpit? Any home made self steering gear? Engine swaps for something really different? Conversion to yawl? Catamaran made from two C30s? Anyone sailing the Around Long Island Race? Any transatlantic? Boston to Nova Scotia? Newfoundland?

Jeez, how much more crazy do you want?!

I'm quitting my job & moving aboard Silent Sun at the end of April, we're sailing down to SF in September and then hopefully to the South Pacific (probably via Mexico, etc) in May. Does that suit? LD

Seabago what have you

My shipmates and I just finished up a years worth of re-tracing the route Magellan took on his first successful voyage to find the Pacific. I took Marconi along and he invented the sideband radio while underway. Last year we went round the horn in a dinghy using a Q-tip for a rudder and a bandaid for a sail - what a gas! There's plenty more where that came from matey............

Investigating Photonic Sail for trip to the moon

I hope to have that miracle inspiration any day now. I figure that by modifying my H320, I should be able to cruise the solar system If only I can overcome earths pesky gravity well!

Our next boat project (never a dull moment )

The attached photo of a Polynesian Tepuke illustrates one of the more exciting and ambitious objectives of Project MARC 2003 in the South Pacific, namely the re-introduction of seaworthy sailing canoes into the isolated and remote communities we are working in. Alas, most of the sailing canoes in Vanuatu are not quite as pictoresque as the Tepukes of the neigboring Santa Cruz archipelago (SE Solomons)where they are being reintroduced by Dr. Mimi George and the other coordinators of the Taumako Project (see link). Nonetheless, the traditional Vanuatu sailing proas share the famous crab claw sail; according to Marchaj a more efficient sailing rig than todays masthead or fractional sloop rigs! Also, the incentive for remote S. Pacific island communities to try and preserve their ancient sailing canoe building and operating skills remains the same; not only as a means of preserving their traditional cultures but also to keep traveling from island to island without being totally dependent on modern vessels and engines they can ill afford to buy, let alone maintain. In August a Project MARC team heading for the SE Solomons (Santa Cruz, perhaps also Tikopia)to offer medical, educational and technical support hopes to make a brief stop in Taumako and learn firsthand about the unique canoe-building skills of these ancient masters. John,

You know, I have had sort of the samefeeling but I am sure ready to splash my boat! 21 days! I did make a sail cover. Went to an awningcompany and bought left over Sunbrella. OK, so my sail cover is red, yellow and blue. It was a outlay of $15 for the Sunbrella and $30 for the Velcro. I also finished a bimini, all out of Blue. I have some bottom paint touch-upand a head curtian to finish and she will be splashed as is. Weather is not cooperating so Varnish will be done on Sunday afternoons. This is not excitement but it is part of sailing. Pray for the troops! r.w.landau
