Hi all, I have recently purchased a Cal 20, hull number 712, and would like to find out more about this aprticular boat. I have spoken to previous owners back to 1993, but nothing before that. One told me that this boat once sailed to Hawaii. Is that likely? Seems like a very small boat to make a voyage of that duration. Would appreciate any info. Thanks, Bob Mendes; Denver CO

SAILING TO HAWAII

Cal 20's have indeed sailed to Hawaii. Here is link of one of those stories: http://www.geocities.com/TheTropics/5471/crossing.htm

SAILING HAWAII

CAL 20's are a very sea worthy boat. They routinely sail the Lahaina to Honolulu Race held every Labor Day. The channels between the islands can be very rough, 12'-14' seas are common. Most of them sail up against the wind and waves to get to Maui to race back. I have sailed between the islands several times in CAL 20's. Although I now own a CAL 25, I still think CAL 20's are a great boat.

Love the idea, but...

As we sail our 20, we joke about sailing to Hawaii. There's things you can do your early twenties, before spouses and kids, and then there are things you can do with the family along. Sailing across the Pacific with four aboard might be tricky...

Cal 20 is like no other!

The Cal 20 is the most forgiving boat I have ever sailed. I have had two and now have a cal 2-29 and an International 505 (16' racer). I sailed my cal 20 in 12-15 foot seas with fresh breeze, sailed all the way around Santa Catalina Island during January storms in heavy seas to weather in 25-30knots of wind, surfed across the channel down 6-7 foot waves following sea wing and wing with a whisker pole. Surfed from west end to LA light in about 2hrs 20 min. with spin. I have made over 30 crossings to Catalina in a Cal 20. Almost never used the engine! I would still have one except, I have kids and bigger is more comfortable for kid have their own space. A well rigged and maintained cal 20 is safe and can be sailed in and out of any slip or channel with experience in almost any condition.
