Here is a piece of trivia for some of you history buffs out there. And if any of you think you are underpaid, wait till the answer to this one comes up. In Abraham Lincoln's time, how many rails had to be split to earn a yard of material for making jeans. The info. I have came from one of the places where Mr. Lincoln split rails for said material.

When I consider the hours needed to spin and weave the linen and wool for a yard of cloth. I would think a couple of dozen. Labor is labor Chestnut splits rather easily.

Expected an answer from you on this. No surprise, but you are not even close.:) I will post up a pic of the sign where he worked, when a few more have given it a shot. I think you will be shocked.

I'll give it a try right after I finish shoveling all this snow....Just have to love white outs...GPS doesn't even help trying to find the end of the driveway....


Oh BTW, believe it was something of 400 rails split for 1 yard of brown jeans....

four hundred rails for each yard of brown jeans necessary to make him a pair of trousers.

The answer according to the posted signs where I found this stuff, is 1000, rails. I am assuming that is either 250 or 500 logs , depending on whether they were split in half or in quarters. The fence on this place looked like a combination of both. Either way I am very glad that I can drive to the store, and get myself a pair of jeans cut, sewn and finished.

On the other side

If you read the right side of that sign, you will see the latest treatment for rabies in the 1850's.
Maybe it works, maybe not. Think I'll take my modern medicine and store bought clothes.

I'm glad I can get fencing at Lowes! By the way, it looks more like Abe's logs were split into 6 or 8 pieces... -Paul
