Our 1980 O'Day 30, just like the Hunter 25 I had back in the 70's and perhaps likte other sloops, has a hinged backrest with its settee in the main cabin. The back rest can be raised 90 degrees from the bottom up, from vertical to horizontal, but with no means of securing it in the horizontal position as a means perhaps of making more room on the settee for lying down or sleeping. Anybody know why this hinged arrangement for these settee backrests?? Jim

backrest

Is it hinged or does it just pivot. The backrest on my O'Day 31 is mounted on a pipe. The ends of the pipe fit in slots on the bulkhead to the hanging locker on one end and the panel between the settee and the stove on the other end. To make more room for sleeping, the backrest lifts directly up, and out a little, and the pipe ends then fit into two slots that are about eighteen inches or so higher than the other. Maybe yours is the same, I don't know.
