We got the whole HIN and my dad/the owner did a little research... Lo and behold, our '77 O'Day 23 is actually a '73. (As you suspected, Ric.) Dad's a little peeved and wants to reach the boatyard that sold it to us to gripe. I still think we got a steal and am pleased to imagine that a '73 (January '73, if the last four digits are correctly interpreted) might have higher resin content to the fiberglass, being before the oil embargo. Fiber reinforced laminates that are resin rich are considered weaker than properly wetted mat, cloth, or roving. As long as there are no dry spots or areas where the layers have lifted, the lay up should perform as expected.

I have a 1972 Oday 23. My HIN number is 3072. That's it!! Anyone have any idea on this number? Is mine simply the 30th boat made in 1972? registration/sales tax
I have just bought an O'Day 40, I am a British Citizen living int he UK. I dont quite understand the registration system. My agent suggests that by registering it in another state (I plan to sail south towards Florida) I can reduce the sales tax payable. It seems that I have to pay a small amount (300 dollars) till spring. Then I must decide whether to register in MA or some other state. This will cost 6% of the sale price. Is there any advantage to registering anywhere on the east coast or is it all more or less the same?

Check with Rhode Island
Not too long ago Rhode Island had a moritorium on sales tax on boats to boost the industry after the luxury tax debacle. I'm not sure if it was only on new boats and you might have had to buy it in the state to qualify. dave
