Glimerton Bridge closure delayed again - Mid-Nov. at least
AIWW Mile: 5.8
Reported By: Mike Ahart, News Editor (WG Staff)
Southbound cruisers can take their own sweet time on the Chesapeake Bay, if it's not already getting too nippy for them.
The Coast Guard Waterways Management Branch office has informed Waterway Guide that the multi-day closure to replace the Gilmerton Bridge span will not happen until mid-November or early December at the earliest. It plans to issue a 45-day rulemaking notice allowing a comment period, and will not issue it until the new bridge span is ready for transport and installation.
The contractors are still preparing the new span for installation at a facility on the Eastern Branch of the Elizabeth River. The new closure, when it is scheduled, will prohibit transit by vessel traffic for at least 4 days.
Considering the many delays so far, maybe we'll need to worry about this closure during the spring migration coming north!
Note: The waterway at mile 5.8 was closed Tuesday and today (Oct. 9 & 11) for maintenance of the railroad bridge.
