has started recently to buble air into the bowl. Its a Jabsco, "el cheapo" which has always worked fine. We have replaced two pump assemblies in the 5 years we have had the boat. The bowl is also collecting brownish water without significantly raising the level. It seems like if water was flowing from and back to the holding tank. No odors. Any ideas?

Sounds like a blocked tank vent...

That would pressurize the tank, creating backpressure that would cause your toilet "burp" and/or backflow. Check the connection at the tank and the thru-hull It's also possible that sea water mineral buildup in the head discharge line has reduced the diameter enough to create backpressure. Check that too. You've bought two pump assemblies in 5 years...Why would you spend over $200 to keep a $100 toilet working...when for about the same money you could have replaced it once with a toilet that won't even need a rebuild for at least 5-6 years?

I know it does not make $en$e.

That's not all, we have a complete new unit sitting in the garage (same model) that was purchased at the the Dania Marine Fleamarket for $75. If we have to get into the discharge hose we may be swapping it now, but we are going to be seeing jabsco for a while. We have a second boat a 27'which has a Wilcox Head-Mate but the crew complaints that the pump is hard and the Dry/Wet lever is cumbersome so that may be the reason why we keep the jabsco. "Crew happy, me happy. Thanks.

Try lubricating the Headmate..

Manual toilet pumps become hard to pump when there's no lubrication to protect the seals and o-rings rubbing against the inside of pump cylinder...kinda like what happens when there's no oil in a car engine. Try flushing a couple of tablespoons--no more!--of baby oil through the pump...I think you'll be amazed at how much more easily it pumps. It won't last long, so you'll either have to keep doing that every couple of weeks or spend about 15 minutes on each toilet to open up the pump to put a good shot of thick teflon grease in it once every spring.
