Hey Mackaroni - 302 Hull/deck joint

Have you inspected the hull to deck joint on your 302? I noticed some water staining on the trim inside the v-birth so decided to have a look.

What I found was this - the through bolts of the joint were tensioned kinda half on/half off a strip of wood that was glassed in along the joint in order to have something to screw the trim to. Well, water had seeped into this wood via the bolts and its wetted out.

The obvious result is that the trim has become water stained. However, upon inspection, since the fairing wood is now wetted out and the bolts were tightened partially on top of it, the bolts are now loose due to the change in thickness.

Maybe take a look at yours? Or maybe you have no water ingress like me

My plan is to cut out that wood and replace/rebed all of the bolts in the joint, ensuring they're against the glass.

I haven't inspected the hull to deck joint recently. but i will take a close look at it early next week some time. I haven't noticed anything like that, nor did anything like that show up on my survey that was done about a year ago. I will let you know if I find anything though. I hope to make it to the boat on Tuesday. It is currently hauled for the winter.

Sorry you found some damage. Any idea if this was original?

I'm not sure as to the age of the issue. I've got all the bolts out and wood cut out around the nuts on the interior.

Now I'm wondering if I should attempt to scrape out the old sealant between the hull/deck and get some new stuff in there. 5200 will not be fun to try to squeeze up into a small down facing crack. Maybe butyl rolled up like a rope can be stuffed up in there instead?
