About your three bladed prop on your h27. What? where? how? I like my renault and I am very interested in changing to a three bladed prop. Thanks Mine is a 1980 h27.

I sold Joe the boat

J, Joe's 1980 27 came to me with the 3 blade prop and I don't know who put it on. I would suggest talking to a prop company. If you read the owner reviews, most of the Cherubini Hunters came under propped and were improved with the addition of a 3 blade prop. The improvement comes not from the number of blades though, but from the increased "driving surface". If you were to look at Joe's prop and compare it to the stock prop found on most of the Renaults and Yanmars, you would see that on the stock prop there is little surface coverage for the circumference that the blade swings through. The 3 blade prop blades are much larger in area. The down side is more drag when you're trying to sail. But let's be real, how much affect can the drag of several square inches cause? Kinda like sticking your hand in the water while sailing....do you think that will slow you down much? I guess if you are a racer, every little bit helps, but I can speak for Joes boat, Catalina 27s didn't stand a chance and I slipped by a C-30 on more than one occasion!

Thanks

Thanks. I grew up on the Barnagat Bay and Toms River. Back in the eighties my family had a 25 hunter with a big black head sail.

New Prop Way to Go

J, Everything Don has said about the 27 and the three-bladed prop I will second. The boat moves pretty fast when under power. I have yet to experience a situation where it felt underpowered. On our lake I have bumped bottom a few times and the diesel and three-bladed prop have gotten me out; once in a 40-50 mph storm the diesel and prop put me through it without a hitch. So I cannot sing the praises of the three-bladed prop enough; it has saved me several times from embarrassing situations. Joe

Possible Source

J, You might try Mack Boring or Torrenson's for the 3 blade. (I am not familiar with these but they were referred to me) Yes, the much abused little Renault has to be the simplest, most dependable diesel ever made. And, it hardly uses any fuel. Good luck on finding a 3 blade. Joe

Try:

J. Cianflone; Your father can pick up a prop for you at Ocean propeller in Toms River. Given the proper information they should come very close to "perfect pitch". They did for me. If you can get him to pay for it you're way ahead of the game.
