Something slightly off normal topics but it's wintertime .......
The kayak is the way to go, even in the winter months. I have a 1995 Keowii Aqua-Terra 9'2" kayak that fits kitty cornered in the bed of my cap pick up truck and I take it everywhere I go. In the summer I use it to get out to my mooring and I drag it behind my sailboat. My dog jumps in and out of it from the boat real easy for when we go to shore. We do a lot of beach combing in the summer and winter months with this kayak. We generally paddle across the river and hide the kayak in the bushes and walk the shoreline looking for washed up goodies. There's a golf course along that side of the river and I find a lot of golf balls which I collect and give to friends who play the game, but I've also found about three mooring balls, a telescopic boat hook, a yard cart, boat fenders, and fishing lures just to mention a few. Of course, this time of the year, the water is freezing and you don't want to tip the kayak over by accident, so you pick the right days with a nice low tide and calm waters. For any sailor who wants to extend their boating season into the winter, the kayak is the way to go, but you need to pick the right days and be prepared for the unexpected. These pics were taken on the Taunton River about two miles from Battleship Cove Fall River Ma. The last pic was taken on the Mystic River in Mystic Seaport CT.

Looks like lots of fun. I rafted the new and gauley for 13 years in 16' Avons and Maravias. Pillow was the only place I ever flipped on the upper. Of course we were only at 1000 cfs experimenting with low water routes and I got cocky and thought I could run the left side. I was doing fine until something caught me and threw me into the pillow. We ended up sitting upside down on Volkswagon laughing about it!

Where are the falls pics taken?

Upper Tellico in N.C. Really nice little creek.
I used to live in Thurmond WV,pop.08 at the time. Worked video boating for several of the rafting companies for over 16 yrs. The New and Gauley were my office! Good times! Now I have to work for a living.

We rafted the "New" and part of the Gauley when I was in school in Ohio. I don't remember if it was upper or lower. Great time. We were in in 10 or 12 man rafts with a guide. We swam some of the class I or maybe even II'- great fun. But the big water was wild. Kayacs were just becoming popular then - I was glad to be in a big raft for some of the rapids. I thing I remember is the noise. When you were approaching a rapid the sound was awesome. It was also forwarning - you knew something was coming but you didn't know what. No trouble focusing on the guide's instructions. Lots of fun ... thirty years ago.

Anybody wants to get a raft or kayak trip together on the New for around late May/early June time frame, give me a shout. Still have all the good rafting company connections for borrowing rafts, gear, etc. I'm pretty sure I remember my way around.... ought to after a couple hundred moonlight trips down the Gorge. 6 or 8 people would make a good bunch.
