A 30+ year old boat.....the boat is always free.... you are buying the outboard, sails and trailer.

Seriously! You can find a boat on a trailer with an outboard and decent sails for what a new trailer costs. But if you really love this boat and are set on buying a trailer for it.... shop craigs list for a really crappy boat sitting on a decent trailer. You will be able to get the trailer + crappy boat for much less than the trailer by itself. I've done this twice. Strip the crappy boat of any decent hardware and offer to deliver the hull for $100 to the first person who will buy it. Done that too.

Here is a pic of a trailer I got (+Crappy boat) for $500... then stripped off a motor mount, two cleats, a nice compass and then sold the boat for $100.

Rick,

This question comes up pretty often. If it really is a one-way trip, build a wooden cradle out of 4X4s. Cross brace like crazy. Set the thing on a car hauler. You could do the same to your boat trailer. Store the cradle for nest time or when you want to bring her home for a paint job.

Here is your trailer for $400.

Strip off the swim platform and ladder, some of the railing (sell that on Craigs List), maybe a compass and a decent anchor and you get the trailer for free. Offer the hull as a project boat (make me an offer kind of thing)... someone will buy it (I don't know why but they will) and then modify the trailer to fit your boat.

Easy peasy lemon squeezy

I am not sure if the boat is on stands or simply sitting on the ground. What you will have a difficult time doing is loading onto the trailer with the swing keel in the up position particularly sitting low to the gorund. In additon, if you do not have the experience, you could be asking for trouble hurting yourself. So there is alot to say without knowing what the boat is sitting on and where.

I would suggest that you try to rent a trailer for the catalina 22 by placing an add on Craigs list in eastern North Carolina or raleigh/durham. Then you will be in a better shape as the trailer will need to conform to the hull; otherwise it will concave in.

As for getting onto the trailer, there are tricks but if inexperienced, I will not discuss

well i got a boat trailer now some how i found a guy out in the middle of no where with a sail boat trailer that is very adjustable i can move the bunks the axle and fenders, and the bow roller. they are all are bolted on so i can move them. the trailer had a 30ft sail boat on it and he was going to make a car trailer out of it!?! the sail boat was in about 3 parts in his field along with a few cars and trucks. if you cut your grass and find a sailboat does that still make you a redneck? also i only paid $350 for it every thing about it looks good just need to get the safety chains replaced and a spare tire and i think i will be good to go

A single will do what you need. And is less expensive to own. In Virginia you need to have breaks on duel axle trailers and they need to be inspected each year. Not true for single axle. Less hassle and a Catalina 22' does not need a duel axle trailer.

Do you have a link to that requirement? I've looked all over and can't find one that spells it out. The few that I did find, which are not official VA sources, only say brakes are required on trailers over 3000 lb GVWR.

http://www.roadkingtrailers.com/brakelaws.htm

I was able to find this one showing inspection requirements (bottom of second column), though. Doesn't specify how many axles require brakes when there are two or more.

Either way, I'll have to add brakes to my other axle if I tow to Florida next winter, as several states on the way specifically state that brakes are required on all axles.

No!

I don't have a URL for that. I guess I could look and I'd probably have the same success you did.

There is a trailer repair place near me (New London Tractor and Trailer) and they told me this. Then I asked a lady at my local DMV and she told me the same thing.

So I went ahead and had the trailer inspected. It cost $16 for the inspection. I had to also pay for a few other upgrades to pass the inspection such as side yellow running lights, a row of red running lights across the back bar, a new master cylinder and and new coupling (and my trailer breaks really do work well now).

AND I now have a very official looking sticker on my trailer and a piece of paper that I was told I should keep in my truck in case an officer ever asks me for it.

I get the impression that trailer patrol is very low on the list of priorities for most cops, but I wanted breaks anyway and $16 did not seem like a lot of money to be sure I was safe.

I hope this helps. I guess the best thing to do is ask your local DMV officer.

IN Virginia, single axle with boat up to 3,000 pounds does not require brakes. Any combined weight over that does require brakes. If tandem axles, then brakes are required on a single axle.

I started my sailboat dealership at Smith Mt. Lake, VA so I know the laws. However, it will vary from state to state on the requirements. Pennslyvania regeristed trailers will require brakes on both axles of a tandem axle trailer.

As for titling and registration, that varies from state to state. Virginia is a title state with registration. You have to have tags. Otherwise you will be subject to a nice controbution to the state in way of a fine.

All states recognize and respect the requirements of other states. A good example is
Tennessee does not require titling and registration on boat trailers. IF you have a TN tag on the car pulling your trailer thru Virginia, then the police will acknowledge that but if you are pulling a TN trailer with a liscensed Virgiinia vehicle, expect to be stopped and ticketed in Virginia but not so in TN.

My goal is to start with this small boat and work my way up to a bigger boat. i can't wait to teach my son to sail and have my wife sail with me agin with a place to actually sleep

I once read someplace that the amount of time you spend sailing is inversely proportional to the size of your boat.;)

I had traded up from a Mac 21' to a Coronado 23', then to a Coronado 25'.... and after 5 years with the Coronad 25' traded back down to a 22' MacGregor because I was lake locked with the 25'. I had more adventures in the 22' Mac then I ever did in either Coronado.... but ask me again in a year.... I just sold my Mac 22' and got a Balboa 26'.
