I'm writing a short story for fun which includes one of the aforementioned sailboats. I need some info. from someone familiar with the herreshoff boats. I need answers to the following: what type of wood was used for planking on a classic Herreshoff, oak? Were some of these boats topsides coated with a clear varnish and were there bluewater cruisers in the 50-70' range that Nate made? Your response is appreciated. Thanks, MC

Nathanael Herreshoff

Nathanael Herreshoff designed over 2,000 different boats including winners in the Americas Cup when the racing was done using J boats in the neighborhood of 143 feet long. He designed a lot of boats in the 50 to 70 foot range and you might call the Herreshoff Museum in Bristol RI to get some more information. By the way, Oak is not used for planking. Mahogany, Douglas Fir or Port Orford Cedar would be common wood for planking although Oak was used for the sheer strake on some boats. And White Oak was common for frames. All the best, Robert Gainer

I'm not a Herreshoff expert, but the name is unavoidable here, and every sailor in RI knows the name well. I don't think that Nathaniel dealt a lot with cruisers, but years ago a guy at the yacht club had a custom designed 42' fiberglass cruiser that was purposely designed with a strong Herreshoff influence. If it had been a college report, it would have been a candidate for plagerism. The mast was raked back to the point that it looked damaged. I have no idea what it cost, but it hardly mattered to this guy. Quite a boat, but it was a much better racer than a cruiser, and the Herreshoff touch was somehow lost in the blue & white gel coat. Anyhow, Others may have done this, and I know the museum is happy to help. Just a thought - I've met a nephew of Nathaniel at a place called Jamestown Distributors in Bristol RI (a great marine supply that caters to do-it-yourselfers). They all seem to know him, and he'll talk your ear off. If you're the bold type, give them a call - they might hook you up. Hey, it couln't hurt. Sorry, I'm at a remote & don't have the #. Good Luck.

Halsey Herreshoff

Steve, Might that be his grandson Halsey Herreshoff? If so Elly you might try reaching him at the museum, the number is 401-253-5000. All the best, Robert Gainer

Could be, I thought he said nephew, but your timing seems better since he's middle aged. Semi-stocky, curly dark grey hair, born in topsiders look. In any event Elly, You can find people to talk with. Best Regards.
