hermit's hump

In one of the three ongoing & concurrent anchor, anchoring and manual windlass/anchoring topics from the past week, Hermit Scott has been trying to deal with what he calls the "hump" on the anchor locker door shown on Maine Sail's picture of his CS36 in this Manual Windlass topic started by Bob S, Reply #13 on page of: http://forums.catalina.sailboatowners.com/showthread.php?t=112667

Rather than try to bang around in those three topics and try to find out in which one hermit left us in suspense last, I decided to start another topic with that link.

I took the opportunity to go down to my boat for the first time since my second surgery on August 21st, some 6 1/2 weeks ago. Yeah! It floats, dry bilge, too!

On the way, I looked at a series of at least four Catalina 30s on our dock, most of the early to mid 80s design, one older and one 1991 or 92.

ALL of them had single (as opposed to dual) anchor locker doors.

NONE of them had the "hump" shown on Maine Sail's CS36 door, nor like newer C34s and C36s with the newer actual anchor rollers instead of what we call the "toy" bow rollers (like I have).

ALL of them, however, had an indentation in the deck just forward of the forward end of the anchor locker door. This "hole" was obviously meant to lead the chain from the end of the shank of the anchor into the locker.

Hermit, even if your shank is AFT of this little opening, there is NO need to build this hump, because the hump will STILL be too far forward of the aft end of your anchor's shank. If it is not, then you may want to consider that perhaps your new bow roller is too long and will/may require support down below from the underside of the new bow roller to the bow itself, like a boomkin, if you don't have any.

I wrote this in the "manual windlass" topic: Regarding that "hump" in the cover of MS's anchor locker, it comes with the boat. In fact, if you'd look at other boats, you'll find that most of the newer ones have that feature. It's useless for anything other than having the chain lead from the anchor shank into the locker. In almost every case you need to open the door to assure a fairlead of rode when deploying and for coiling up the rode when retrieving.

I'm sorry I didn't bring my camera down to the dock, but it was a looong way back to the car on my crutches.

You still need to open the door, the rode doesn't just magically wiggle out of the hole, nor does it set itself back in there.

Our anchor rode and chain rests on a simple garden hose holder inside the locker.

This is why I keep asking for a photo of your setup to help you.

So, I know it's your boat, your choice, I just don't see the need to do any fiberglass work given the configuration of the Catalina 30 bow, unless your boat is different. Tryin' to save you some work.

Of the four or five C30s on my dock, each one did it DIFFERENTLY. That's why I keep suggesting that you go look at a marina with a lot of C30s to gather ideas.

Here's how our anchor works. If my anchor shank was longer, I would simply run the small amount of chain from the aft end of the shank along the top of the deck into the "hole." As it is for us, my geometry works perfectly. Should I need a larger Rocna which would be longer, that's what I'd do. If I felt that chain on the deck would scuff or stain the fiberglass, I'd put some sacrificial material underneath it.

This is what mine looks like. Unfortunately, I removed my anchor because we were expecting TS Danny. It has the hump. I always open my locker to deploy or retrieve the anchor. There is a short wire cable with a clip that I attach to the lifeline holding it open. Had it shut on my ankle once. :cussing:

I would like to see how you do that Stu. I am looking for a way to keep the chain from resting atop the nylon rode. It can leave some nasty looking rust stains

Surgery huh?? and didn't get to the boat?? I thought you were a little more grouchy than usual!
Thanks for checkiing those C30s out. I did some measuring last time I was at my boat. I think the bow roller will stop flush with the front edge of the anchor locker. and the tip of the shank of the anchor will stop just shy of the end of the bow roller base. I bought a camera today so I will be able to get pictures. Everyone's deck looks so clean and new in the pictures they take. It will be a few years before I get to paint mine.
I will probably cut a notch in the front edge of the door and try to dress it up nicely. I guess I don't really need a hump on it.
I hear what you are saying about support underneath. Depending on how far it sticks out I may have to.

Stu, I'd also like to see how the garden hose holder is set up in your anchor locker.

Sorry, no pictures but

the aft wall of the anchor locker is a big flat vertical wall. The plastic garden hose holder, kinda a tannish-gray color, standard stuff, is just screwed onto that wall. Sometimes I hang the chain on our old big Danforth, sometimes on the rode and sometimes it just gets "tossed" into the locker at the bottom. I usually hose it all off with clean water when return.

Don't worry about the color of your anchor rode, no one's gonna see it in the locker nor underwater.

Bob, you have the hump 'cuz you have a Mark II. The Mark Is did not. The little hole they had was about 1/4 the width of the full sized opening shown in my pictures right forward of the edge of the anchor locker door.

Those doors have to be held up by bungee cords or something else, they hurt when they drop on your hand, arm, leg or toes. Tons of different ways to do it.

I have a pair of "anchor gloves" cheap hardware store brown cotton gloves, get replaced a few times a season for just working with the anchor and the dock hose (it's black, a good hose, but dirty on the hands).

Hermit, I'm always cranky :):):) - but I'm told by trained PT personnel that the constant pain doesn't help.

I know, it's just the repetition that gets me down...;)

Hey Stu

With your handicap how do you crawl into the aft berth on the C34? Do you use that or just use it for storage? Looks like ventilation would be tough back in there. The O'Day has a traditional quarter berth and I was wondering how the aft berths worked from an owner. The O'Day 322 had an aft berth like yours.

Handicap is temporary, easier to "run around" on the boat than at home anyway! More handholds...:)

We bought the boat "for" the aft cabin after our C25 with its quarterberth, used it until we found out how really big [huge] the V berth is and moved. Great storage and guest cabin aft. Some of our C34 folks still love the aft cabin, others call it "the garage."

Ventilation is fine, two opening ports and either a hatch or vent Nicro in the over head cabintop.

Dryfit

I just got the epoxy in to pot the holes. So this is a dry fit. I have to modify the aluminum part because it will cause chafe the way it is now. I got the roller really close to the toe rail but the downside is the tip on the the center claw will hit the bow when the boat moves. I'd have to put something there for it to rest on.
I have to have a support in the center of the bow pulpit going down to the chain plate for the stay.
On the port side you can see where I tore up the gel coat with the chain. This is a long way from being finished but not too far away from enableing me to anchor out.
I think it's a little ugly but I hope it works.
