The Spaniards are claiming that one of their 200 year old ship wrecks, salvaged in international waters after it was found by the salvage company, be returned to them in-full. The bounty is worth half a billion. They found a lawyer and a court in the U.S. (of course) that might agree with them. Wonder how a U.S. court can re-write maritime law, much less have jurisdiction??? Thoughts? Lawyers?

It won't go far

The lawyer sees a big paycheck even if he doesn't win. He will do his best to find a case with it but he will probably fail. In the end he will get paid and the Spanish Gov will pay the lawyer and right off the money that they lost as no big deal. If I was the team that found the gold and I was still picking it up off of the bottom I think that I would fly a Jolly Roger after I found out that the Spanish Gov was trying to get the money back :p

But then again who knows what will happen. I have known a lot of nice people who have gotten into law with the best of intentions, who have become less than nice while practicing law. They were corrupted by confusing what is right and what is legal. Bad Obsession is right, the lawyer will win out in the end. Joe S

The Spanish should

check out what happened to Mel Fisher after he found the Atocha. Fla. tried to take all of that treasure, and Mel Fisher fought them all the way to the supreme court, and won. It's terrible that gummints are so damn greedy. Of course nearly all people in gummint are lawyers.

The rightful owners of all that treasure

are the native peoples of the Americas that the Spaniards stole it from in the first place. How can Spain, after raping, pillaging and decimating a whole civilzation to get the stuff, claim it's theirs? That's like the Norwegian gov't claiming that a Viking ship full of gold found off the Irish coast belongs to them, when the Vikings stole it in the first place.
