What does a thruhull strainer do? Whats it's purpose. Do they need to be replaced often? Responses appreciated, thanks. M.C.

You need to keep them clean

They stop stuff like seaweed from getting in your lines. You need to keep them clean but you don't usually need to replace them.

Mark also consider, after the first haul out,

throwing it in the garbage. On many Hunters, mine included, there was no way to keep weeds from plugging the through hull. On Puget Sound, we gotta lot of weeds. Solution? One of those inexpensive colander style external strainers. Perfect. Mark, how's the wiring?

Hi Fred.

Electrical is getting better, works most of the time, I think time and corrosion have made it a little inconsistent, I installed an ignition switch and the diesel turns-over, I believe it is repairable. Hey Fred, I have one thruhull strainer) directly in the middle of my hull behind the keel. Don't know what it does? Possibly water intake for the engine? Have any ideas, your response is appreciated. Thx, M.C.

Thanks Mark, best of luck,

Unless you have a head back there, and you only have one so it's probably not for the refer or watermaker, it must belong to the engine.

Some put "scoop" on Backwards

Some boats have a clamshell type scoop on them that folks turn to face backward which cuts down on amount of weeds get stuck there. On my boat there is no strainer at the hull, just the raw water strainer on intake line. I only ocassionally have to clean out "endangered" eelgrass.
