Just got back from a month of cruising on our 320. As the month progressed, there was a bad odor that got continually worse----we initially thought we had "head" problems. Then we noticed that every time the refrigeration went on, the vent below the setee on the starboard side was helping to emit the bad smell. As background, we need to replace the pressure valve on the hot water tank, as it is not working properly under normal conditions (will be done this week). Water continually drains as the water gets hotter---into the bilge, of course. Also, the refrigeration probably works harder under cruising conditions, since we get into it more often. Could it be condensation on the refrigeration unit? Since the bilge runs more, putting CP into it was only a partial fix---- Carol

I would bet that you have identifed you problem with the pressure value on the water heater.The water must flow from the heater area to the bilge and I would bet that there is a smelly pool of water somewhere between the heater and bilge. Fix the heater and then clean the entire bilge including where the water flow was.I would bet that the connection between the refrigerator and the smell is that the refer condensor fan is blowing the oder around.Anyway that is where I would start, you have to fix the heater anyway!

A wet dirty bilge or a trapped pocket of stagnant water can easily smell like like a sewer...and putting warm water into that primordial soup would only help to increase the odor because bacteria multiply faster in warm conditions than in cold. Putting C.P. in the bilge is unlikely to help much if at all...'cuz not only does the bilge pump remove it, but you'd need gallons of it in a space that large even if it didn't. You really should install a sump and sump pump and reroute your icebox, AC condensate drain and shower drain into it...a sump is a lot easier to keep clean than a whole bilge. A weekly dose of a few oz. of C.P. would work very well in it.

Hot Water Expands
and has to go somewhere. Do you have an hydraulic accumulator installed? Every time you run off some hot water, cold water replaces it and then when it heats up it expands. If your pipework does not allow this then the expansion valve on the calorifier must weep. An hydraulic accumulator will cope with this and make your pump run less frequently.
