Don't take this the wrong way, but if you have to ask those questions then you are behind the sailing power curve.
This was my immediate reaction as well!
Orca, it sounds like you are not already a sailor. If that is the case, and time is truly the limiting factor, which I interpret to mean that you are short on time, then you need to rethink your plan. While we don't know why you want to do this, you may want to consider getting to Cartagena by other means than your own boat, then buying a boat when you get there and learn to sail it as time allows. Consider signing on as crew with a boat that is going that way, to get some experience before you buy your first boat. Start small, and work your way up. Learning to sail on a big boat is starting in the wrong place, IMHO.
