This was my immediate reaction as well!

Orca, it sounds like you are not already a sailor. If that is the case, and time is truly the limiting factor, which I interpret to mean that you are short on time, then you need to rethink your plan. While we don't know why you want to do this, you may want to consider getting to Cartagena by other means than your own boat, then buying a boat when you get there and learn to sail it as time allows. Consider signing on as crew with a boat that is going that way, to get some experience before you buy your first boat. Start small, and work your way up. Learning to sail on a big boat is starting in the wrong place, IMHO.

I thought the same thing when I saw the "Subject". It's right up there with "Question" as a subject. Makes me crazy (doesn't take much)!

I agree, that to ask the question of "what size boat" means this person is years away from making that trip a successful one. The Atlantic was crossed in a ten foot boat, Tinkerbell. Years of sailing and preparation are needed. The answer will come to himself.
