Help With Yanmar SB8

We just purchased a 1979 Hunter 27' with a Yanmar SB8 diesel. It appears that a plate or something is missing from the bracket that holds the alternator. The bracket bolts on to the starboard side of the engine. The plate or missing part fits over an opening into the water jacket. There is also something missing from a threaded hole underneath the larger opening. The temperature sensor is in a threaded hole above the larger opening. Does anyone know what the missing parts are, and where I could purchase them, close to Atlanta, Georgia? Thanks in advance for your help!

Get a Service Manual....

I have the same engine on my '78 27. Call Torrenson Marine or Max Boring Or go to their web sites and get a service manual for the engine. Not that expensive, about $30, and worth the money. Without looking at my engine I can't help. But you should always have the manual. Great engine and easy to work on. Good luck.

Yep, I knew I needed a manual and plan on getting one right away! Glad to know they are good engines, and that they are easy to work on, because I'll be the one working on it most of the time! Thanks again!

Mike: Sounds like the larger hole you are describing is where the engine zinc is installed. There is a larger hole with two threaded holes on either side. It is aft of the alternator. There is a plate that the zinc is mounted on. The plate gets bolted to the water jacket. Below that is a smaller hole where a petcock is threaded in to drain the water jacket. I never use the petcock. I am afraid if I try to open it I'll break it. I remove the plate with the zinc to drain the engine when winterizing. There are two manuals for the SB8. One is a service manual. It has information like nominal width of the #1 piston ring. If you are rebuilding the engine this manual might be useful. I never use the service manual. The parts manual is valuable however. It has drawings showing the assembly of all the parts on the engine. It also has the Yanmar part number for all the parts which is a big help in ordering parts. I got the manuals and order my parts online from Torresen.com. David David
