we were motoring into a marina saturday when my throttle lever broke off when i tried to move it. made it in fine- my wife just had to work the throttle lever on the engine. the cable was froze..i disconnected it on the engine side and after a couple of taps with a hammer it now moves again. do i trust it now or should i replace it? ALSO, I dropped one of the screws that holds the compass mount on the pedistal down into the pedistal.. how do i remove the pedistal to retreive the screw? I dont't know why the cable froze in the first place, any similar experiences? Any easy way to get the screw I dropped down inside the pedistal. My Vision 32 is a 1989 model, how long do the cables last?

HI HOWARD, WHAT PART OF THE ...

throttle lever broke? I wrote a couple of articles about shifter and throttle cables. Sometimes owners use regular petroleum oil to lubricate these cables. Not a good idea! This stuff tends to gum up the works when used in a marine environement. You want to use a teflon based non-petroleum lubricant. I'm not certain about the Vision 32, but most Hunter boats use the made-to-length Teleflex cable. Call Hunter and they will give you the length for your boat. WM carries most all lengths. If it were my boat I would replace them both. I'm assuming that the clevis on each end is still useable. As far as the pedestal goes, most Edson pedestal are secured to the cockpit sole with four flat head bolts. It can be a pain to pull it up because of the steering cables and electrical wire. Can you see the screw? If you can I would buy one of those long handled pincers (or whatever they are called) from Pep Boys that mechanics use to retrieve non-ferrous parts. Terry
