Does anyone know anything about roller reefing claws? The manual for my 66 Mariner 19 suggests a reefing claw when roller reefing and my boat does not have one. Where could I get one? What does it look like and how do you use it?

Picture of reefing claw

I have a picture of a reefing claw if you want to send me an e-mail at roger02@mts.net I have difficulty posting here, so will return the picture by e-mail. I'll tell you in advance however that they don't work well, and are a pain in the rump. Roller reefing is a real pain in general, (the type that rolls around the boom, because sail shape is greatly sacrificed. Most people who are committed to putting a reefing system on their small boats, go to jiffy reefing.

Jiffy Reefing

is the way to go Bob. If you want to use the roller reefing without the claw, you would need to install a swivel tang plate at the end of your boom and have your main sheet attached to that somehow. It's hardly worth the effort or the cost. The claw isn't too good for the sail and can wear a hole in it. Also, when the sail is rolled, the aft end of the boom would be hanging a little low and uneven. Joe
