I have just installed a new MSD porta pottie in my Catalina 22, but am unsure about the best way to run the pump out and vent hoses.

I feel I have enough experience with my boat to properly complete this installation, I don't have enough experience to choose the proper routing and placement of the hoses and fittings.

I originally posted in the Catalina 22 group hoping to get some advice from someone who already has a similar system installed, but no advice has been forthcoming, so I thought I would post here.

My first thoughts were to install the fittings on the side deck to keep the lines as short as possible, but this would mean that the lines would intrude into the cabin, as well as requiring a large hole for the pump out in an area near the chain plates. My recent thoughts were to run the lines under the liner and up the bow and put the fittings near the anchor locker. I have attached some photos to illustrate what I had in mind.

What would you suggest is the best way to complete my install?

I'd run the vent line forward to come out the hull just below the toe rail...run the pumpout line over to the hull and up to the side deck. That will require going under the liner...keep the bend in the pumpout line as gentle as possible. If it has to be a tight bend, don't bend the hose...break the hose and insert an inline 90 or 45 radius fitting.

Just making sure...

Thanks for your reply Peggie. There is no space between the hull and liner along the side. Here is a picture. The only space between the hull and liner is at the bow, in shot two. If I ran the pump out hose to the bow, it would require an ~12" dip in the line to clear the storage compartment, and the back up to the deck, and would be about 6 feet long in all. If I ran up the side as you suggest, it would not have a dip and would be shorter, but it would run into the cabin. If you still feel that is the best way to go, I will look to build a cover of some kind to hide the hose and deck fitting from inside the cabin.

I didn't suggest running the pumpout line to the bow...I suggested running the VENT LINE to the bow...but ifyou're right about the path that would have to take, that's not a good plan either. Your best option just might be putting a nice cover/box over the hoses...plywood painted to match the gelcoat or teak or maybe polypropylene,

I took another look at your first photos and saw where you've drawn the proposed location for the holes...Why do you want to bring the vent and pumpout lines down before going under the berth instead of going straight through the wall? Seems like unnecessary bends to me.

I understand you suggest running it to the deck adjacent the head as the best option. I just wanted to point out that that option would require some kind of cover/box as you mentioned.

It was my idea of running the hoses to the bow, in order to make it less obtrusive in the cabin since there is no place to hide the hoses. I had envisioned running the hose down at a 45 degree angle in order to dodge the storage compartment under the v-birth, and then bringing it up to the deck. I thought this would be the best way to conceal the hoses, but was unsure if this would be satisfactory as far as functionality was concerned. I guess it might be possible for waste to collect in the low spot of the hose and cause issues?

Thanks again.

You guessed it...that's what's wrong with it.

Plan B (maybe): Cut a hole in that wall and turn it into a nice hatch. Instead of running the hose down to run across the bottom of that locker, go UP....run the hose(s) across the TOP of it, secured with a couple of C-clamps.

Whaddaya think?

If you'd like to brainstorm in more detail than is practical in a general discussion forum, send me an email.
